My mother has dementia and it is becoming worse, they have had a financial assessment from social services and when time comes she will be funded, they do own their own home, probably worth £250K

They live a long way from family, we are nearest about 1.5 hours drive away.

If she goes into a care home can she be moved near us, a different county. My father is not good at coping on his own, so would he be able to sell their house and buy something near us? We are in a more expensive area so majority from the sale would be needed to buy something here.
I was told by someone that social services would want to take some of the sale to cover care costs if their property was sold.
Is this true?

Local Authorities differ and my experience goes back 5 years . I was told that my mother would have been allowed to move LAs, only if she was self funding. That is because the arrangement is private between her and the home

I do believe that the LA will take the half of her house if it is sold. I would check this by telephoning AGEUK , they are very helpful. They know all the current legislation.

I'm sorry to hear about your mum's worsening dementia. Her case has to do with old age and it's regarded as a category of disability. Choosing a care home can be tricky in your case. I found this stuff online, and I believe it'll help comfyempire.com/homes-people-disabilities/
