Vacuum Cleaner for elderly MIL

Hello all, just joined the website :)

I am currently looking for a new vacuum cleaner for my elderly MIL, any recommendation please?

She is in her mid 80s, she is fairy active, able to do most of the house work BUT she has arthritis in her fingers, so she can't use the Dyson animal vacuum cleaner like we have (which you have to keep pressing the trigger(?) like a pistol.)

She lives in two storey house so has stairs, and mainly carpet everywhere. (which she has nose/dust allergy - and previously had nose polyps surgery done which i am not surprised --but that's another story..)

Currently she is using an old corded slightly heavy vacuum cleaner, so she is looking for something slightly lighter weight and easy to manoeuvre in the house. it doesn't have to be cordless.

Thanks in advance!

This thread is a bit old now, so if you have landed here looking for recommendations, we recently updated our best vacuum cleaner buyers guide, featuring the best cordless, cylinder and upright vacuums, tried and tested by Mumsnet.

We hope you find this useful.

Mum’s best friend is 83 and has back trouble. She bought a GTech and she’s really pleased with it. I’ve tried it, it’s very lightweight.

My mum is still using a heavy corded hoover!

My Mum has a 2 in 1 Morphy Richards. Will attach a photo. It's cordless and can be used upright or as a handheld. Very light and easy to use. She's 91, nearly 92 and still wants to do her own cleaning! Smile

Worth considering two vacuum cleaners, one for upstairs and one for downstairs. No more carrying up and down stairs. With luck you can manage half way up the stairs with the downstairs one without having to carry it anywhere, and halfway down with the upstairs one.

Robot or a weekly cleaner who does it !

I have dodgy joints and crap hands and love my sebo X4, but some people do still find it too heavy.

My parents have an upstairs hoover and a downstairs one.
Additionally you could get a tiny hand held for the stairs.

I also have an upstairs and a downstairs. The Sebo is upstairs for the carpets. Basic Miele C1 downstairs for hard floors.

The simple GTech which costs about £70. Very light and cordless and switches on and off with a foot button.

Hi all, I am so glad to see many replies, thank you :)
*VC = vacuum cleaner

Gtech seems popular for Mumsnet members/relatives? I'll also check Morphy Richards (wow @Aquietflame 's mum is so independent)
and Sebo X4 (this is new to me).

Just picked up a latest Argos catalogue and given to MIL to give her an idea of how modern VCs look like.

That's a brilliant idea to have a VC in each floor! makes sense!

(FIL is in hospital now and we just did a big clean up in his room. that's when I discovered this current VC isn't easy for her to do the whole house. and no, she doesn't want to hire a cleaner)
