Private Care Home Costs in Scotland

My dear MIL qualifies for fully funded care home. We have been to see a few, but none “feel right”. There are a few private care homes close by, and we were wondering if it is possible for us to “top up” the council funding ourselves, or whether the family would need to fully fund the whole amount? MILs savings are below the threshold for self funding. FIL still living at home so no property to sell.

Don’t know for certain but I think that would be in order. The National Care home rate in Scotland is £689 ( nursing care) so I would imagine that if the home chosen is £989/ week then her social worker will make sure formal letters are in place explicitly stating the outstanding £300 to be met in full by family members.

As you are in Scotland I'm assuming that when you say fully funded you don't mean CHC/ NHS care and mean that the council has assessed your MIL as not having to contribute to the cost if her care?

You need to google third party top ups if that's the case. The care homes you like the look of should be able to tell you what their top up amount is.

Dont know but i do know its horrendously expensive. We let dads house and the rent pays most but not all of the costs. His savings are now all gone. We will have to sell the house next year, putting a young family out and use the income from the sale. Its onky a council house so not worth much. When that money is gone, I dont know what happens. He has advanced dementia and spends most of his time refusing to eat, crying and begging to die. And still we pour thousands of pounds into a local care gome to keep him alive afainst his wishes. Someone, somewhere is making serious money out of vulnerable old people and their families!
Rant over, apologies for thread hijack.

And typos.

demented that sounds so difficult for him, for you and for the staff. Presumably the doctor has reviewed his meds to see if they can get a better outcome for him? A few patients at DM’s care homes who were distressed had their drugs tweaked. No idea in what way but they were less confrontational and angry and didn’t sleep all day so it was better ...
hmm when you make contact with a possible care home I think you preface the conversation with ‘do you take national care home rate clients?’

Thank you all. We are just at the beginning of our journey so the info you have provided was very helpful
