My MIL has dementia and lives far from both us and her daughter. (she has carers coming 3 times a day)

My DH was just with her for a few days and it seems she gets up at 2 or 3 in the morning and has no idea what time it is and goes and has breakfast and then wonders why it's all dark and cold.

as we have small children i thought of a gro-clock type thing to let her know when it's morning... however the gro clock needs to be set up every evening

is there any similar thing that can be set up remotely or that is always on? or is this a stupid idea?

thanks

MIL has one of these, but ignores it totally. She follows the same erratic sleep pattern (bed at 3 pm, up throughout the night), and is totally confused with time.

Thanks for replying.

As far as i know the last carers come at 9pm to give the medicine (which has to be in a locked cabinet) so she doesn't go to bed too early... but still doesn't work...

i have no idea if she would follow it... she has only been diagnosed since last Easter... but has been quite a quick decline

Google "dementia clock"
This is what our local hospital has in its elderly wards
www.amazon.co.uk/Night-Analogue-Clock-Alzheimers-Dementia/dp/B007HKWS88?tag=mumsnetforum-21

... although there's some discussion as to whether digital is better than analogue.

If she is getting up at night, you possibly have to go with the flow and make sure the house is comfortably warm at night time.

Hello Tiny

I've attached a pic of the one Mum has. ( as pp said google dementia clock) It has limited to an extent the confusion about day/ time, but she still gets up at 4 am for her breakfast, then goes back to bed. Carers now call 3x daily to administer meds and like yours, these h ave to be in a locked box. Hoping their visits will at least impose some structure for her as am managing it from afar.

Also like yours, mine has deteriorated rapidly. It's rubbish, isn't it.

ThanksWine

Thanks everyone, those look great. My husband is saying maybe the more visual one might be better, but we will definitely investigate

This seems to be what you want.

You can also get sensors that would detect when she moves in the night and have a sound recording that could say 'Jane, its night time, go back to bed' like this

Wow thanks. Will share the links with my husband and he can forward to his sister

My DM also has the one Grinchly posted.
I got two, so one in the bedroom and one in the kitchen, as she also does the getting up to make breakfast at 4-5.00 am. It seems to help to a certain extent, though at times she seems to wake up too panicked to remember to look at the clock.
