Can anyone recommend a phone for someone who is very deaf?

Calling my DM is becoming more and more difficult as she can't hear us on the telephone. Can anyone suggest a phone that works with hearing aids and had a very high volume?

I got an iPhone for my mum who is very deaf and she can hear if she uses the speaker function. Likewise with the landline, she can hear it on speaker.

Does your mum have a loop?

FrettyFifties · 30/09/2018 17:30

Thanks.
Speaker on phone and iPhone aren't great for her as she is used to holding phone up.
Will look at the amplifon.
Not sure re loop.

After researching and testing lots, we ended up with these https://www.actiononhearingloss.org.uk/shop/phones/t415-amplipower-50/. After struggling to put the speaker function on fo4 ages, m6 mother f8nds this one ok. She still doe#nt hear well but can tell who is calling and why, rather than long chats.

One of the three we purchased caused unacceptable interference on the line. With it unplugged, the other two work well. I am putting off returning it, i know i must do this soon, expect to have tbe box back by next weekend.

If the suggestions above haven't helped you find something suitable. Do look online for.local adult services website. Often there are links on there.

As DM has hearing aids, you can contact the local adult services team to ask for referral to sensory loss/hard of hearing team for advice /assessment, if DM agrees.
For eg if she struggles to hear on phone, how is she with smoke alarm, doorbell , TV etc?. So there might be other equipment that would also be useful to find out about.

Some LAs run hard of hearing equipment clinics that you can try/ or get advice on.

I would be looking at new hearing aids rather than a new phone.
Many hearing aids can now stream to a mobile or landline phone which may help her more. Though good hearing aids privately will cost

My mum is very deaf and we are getting her a head set that we saw used in the hospital by the ot. The patient wears it and the other person speaks into a microphone and my mum said she heard brilliantly with it. You can put the microphone beside the TV when she is watching so presumably she could use it while on the phone. I will see if I can find out what they are called.

For an example. Here's a link to hard of hearing private telephone equipment

Try Connevans. I used to work in assistive technology and we often used them. I'm hard of hearing myself with hearing aids and I bought a landline phone from them

Connevans do a range of products including mobiles.

Also the local fire service fitted two smoke alarms which are wirelessly connected to an alarm with lights and vibrating pad for under my pillow. Free of charge.
