Hi,
I gave my mum a tablet a couple of months ago - she loves it !

She has asked for more apps to be put on for her to learn - I only put audio books, catch up tv and general internet for her to learn but she wants more :)
I can only think of gransnet and silver surfers. Does anyone have anything to suggest please.

PS - am really proud of her that she has grasped it

I have no advice other than online Libary services (amazing), and a bit dull probably 🙄 but want to say I love when people try something new and can ask for help, particularly older people. This made me think of my own mam- fearless with everything new. Often went hideously and hilarious wrong! Good luck 😉

Does she mean she wants to learn how to use the apps or use the tablet to learn about new topics?
Open learn (open university) has lots of free short courses in a variety of subjects.

My Nan (late 70s) loves word games like "words with friends" and she has a few fellow silver surfers that she plays with. Most word/number games you can get in an app version - does she like Sudoku?

Are there any local forums, such as nextdoor, council website, u3a? Futurelearn run short free courses if she wants to learn and interact with others.

EBay, my Nan used to love charity shops and antique fairs I always think how much she would of loved EBay.

Jigsaws? Other game apps?

Does she want to learn how to chat with people online? Forum based on her interests?

LostInLeics · 26/05/2018 16:48

Another recommendation here for FutureLearn. Have you set her up with any podcast subscriptions?

ceecee32 · 26/05/2018 18:14

Thank you for all your suggestions - never thought of podcasts. She is wary of ebay because she is worried about paying for anything on line and thinks she is going to be scammed (not a bad thing if I am honest).

She loves Sudoko on paper but shakes a bit and I thought it might be too difficult for her but will see how she goes on.

I will point her in the direction of Future learn and OU. - She loves watching how to do things on You Tube and is amazed that she has been wearing the wrong size bra for all her years after watching a video of how to measure herself.

What are her interests?

Mosaic123 · 26/05/2018 18:19

BBC Weather and a Time in other places app in case she calls relatives and friends abroad.

Spotify if she likes music.

mookinsx · 26/05/2018 18:29

My nan loves to do the family tree - don't know if there's an app for that
Suduko or crossword apps?
News apps
Games even? My grandparents love their iPad and enjoy watching tv and video calling the family

IvorHughJarrs · 26/05/2018 18:49

You can get apps like Pixel Art or Paint By Numbers that are quite relaxing. Even games like Candy Crush are quite good as there's no time limit for those who think slower or have less dexterity

Knitjob · 26/05/2018 18:54

Sign her up to mumsnet!

Our library has an app you can use for downloading audiobooks and e-books.

If she likes gardening, then GrowsonYou is a very friendly forum.

My 83 year old DM likes solitaire and scrabble. She was quite addicted to Angry Birds for a while, but never got the hang of it really (“those flying pigs are really annoying”).
