Buildings Insurance Cover for Unoccupied House?

My mother has moved into a care home and her home insurance is up for renewal. Our plan is to get her house done up and rented out but we need to get buildings insurance cover. This seems quite tricky when the house is unoccupied. Can anyone recommend which company I could use? Many thanks.

I would look at using an insurance broker - they have the knowledge to find good deals.

I have sent you a PM.

Agree with suggestion above. Its not strictly unoccupied if you have builders in.

Also builders should be covered for probably up to £1million as part of their standard cover. Worth asking them what cover they have and telling the broker.

I've recently had to deal with this as my relative has gone into a care home and I have to clear their house. I just phoned up their insurer (Direct Lane) and explained the situation, the policy is dearer obviously but it wasn't a problem getting it put in place.

I have just done this for my inlaws - I did use a comparison website but only one company quoted me. I rang up and explained the situation about the house being empty except for us going up to see it once every six weeks when we visit inlaws in their care home. The company was Fresh and was very helpful. Now we just have to sell the house!
