Should I be worried about MIL - so sleepy?

MIL has been staying with us this week while my BIL (her usual carer) is on holiday. She's got vascular dementia so is pretty confused but today, after seeing the NY in with us last night is very, very sleepy. She wasn't up particularly early this morning and probably had around 7/8 hours sleep. She's mentioned "that she doesn't feel 100% but is ok". I'm concerned but don't know if we should be calling the doctor/out of hours just yet. Apart from being very sleepy she seems ok if a little pale. Oh what to do?

Thoughts anyone?

This might be totally ridiculous - but do you have a carbon monoxide alarm? Does her room contain/is it near the boiler? I am wondering if this could be carbon monoxide poisoning.

If she went to sleep much later than usual she will be extra tired and probably more confused. Let her nod off but keep an eye on her. Make sure she is not too hot or cold and drinks water when she is awake.

It will have taken a lot out of her being away from home, out of her wee routine etc. Make sure she has plenty drinks and eats little & often.

Thanks everyone. No, the boiler is well away from the living area although we do have carbon monoxide detectors DH hasn't had a chance to fit them yet Blush.

I think you're right - she's extra tired after an active and late night but I will watch her.

She also complained that she's eating too much! Perhaps, that's another vote for the little and often! But, she's not drinking enough water but going through gallons of coffee which I don't think is great.

I'll keep an eye on her nodding head... so sad that a series of mini-strokes has caused such a strong and fit woman to become so frail so quickly.

If she's eating and drinking, and drinking whatever it is, then she should be ok. Decaf might be better if you have any. It's when they slide in and out if sleep and don't drink or eat anything you need to worry. Just been there with DM.

My parents both seem to need at least 12 hours sleep a day, and thats without anything different going on. I think mum (who has dementia) might easily sleep 16+ if doing more, and also sometimes she'll sleep as her brain just can't cope and needs to reboot

Just a quick update for interest MIL much brighter, more awake and aware today! NY celebrations must have really wiped her out. Thanks for your assurances. I was over-worrying.Blush

Glad she is a bit brighter today.
You sound like you are very fond of her and that you are doing your best for her.
Happy New Year.

Not over worrying - just caring.
