I had the Endudring POA done over 10 years ago, got the full set for my parent's and disabled brother. So I have a on!
Mum has been diagnosed with dementia, at what point do I register, is it difficult and how much does it cost?

I know for a LPA it's about £130 but reduction if donor in receipt of certain benefits. With LPA's you can register anytime then use when needed, assume it's the same with EPA but worth checking with the OPG. Think it's a matter of filling in a form and sending off with the fee. Takes a couple of month or so for it to be done.

The old EPA's don't cover health and welfare issues unless it's been specifically written in. If your Mum is still ok to do so it's worth sorting a Heakth and Welfare LPA.

Will be keeping the old EPA, legal fees are something she would not want to pay, she will trust me with the healthcare aspect I guess

You can do them yourself and then it's just the registration fee. The EPA will be fine except if there is ever a dispute between you and your Mum and SS about her care eg.

What happened to my Mum is pretty rare but she was effectively a ward of SS for a couple of months this years and held in a CH as no Health and Welfare POA in place. My Brother wanted to remove her and was told he must abide by any decision the Panel made at a Case conference or else SS solicitors would take him to the Court of Protection.

I was never threatened with this as made clear I would listen to what the professionals involved in her care advised . If you had told me all this a year ago when we hadn't even got as far as a diagnosis I would have laughed. Now for the sake of £130, a printer and a few hours I would advise everyone to have one in place. I believe SS can still over ride it in sme circumstances but it is a sensible precaution to have in place.

How awful, that must have been very upsetting and stressful for you all. I will look into it but to be honest I have all on just claiming the AA at the moment!

The OPG form about fees here says its £110.

I've just had financial and health LPAs done and registered for my parents, and though my parents would tell everyone they trust me with health/welfare decisions, it actually gives me the right to do that, and make difficult decisions at the end of their lives if needed.

OPG are really helpful over the phone. An alternative is posting on Talking Point, the Alzheimers Org website. They seem to have moderators who know the tekie stuff.
