Anyone know about care options in Canterbury (private, state, residential or daily visits)

My 93 year old granny lives in Canterbury and is increasingly physically frail. She can't walk without a walker, needs a stair lift, painful legs due to fluid retention, quite often falls, etc. Up till now my aunt and mum have been doing visits to help her get food/wash/dress/take medication but it's getting to the point where she needs more and more help and they can't cover it.

Can anyone recommend any sort of care home or agency in Canterbury? there are funds to pay for private if necessary.

My gran is very bright and still mostly in possession of her marbles (she is a bit forgetful but we think that is due to lack of sleep mostly). If residential care she'd prefer somewhere with nice rooms and a garden, she would keep to herself mostly so organised fun is not so important (and she'd probably hate it!). If a daily visitor then is there any agency that will send the same person all the time?

She is fiercely independent so persuading her to make changes will be difficult but at least if there are some reasonable options to consider that is a starting point...

Any recommendations would be much appreciated. or indeed any places to avoid.

Have a look on here. They list care homes and many of them have reviews from relatives. You can also look at the inspection reports for each home.
Get in touch with Social Services who can also send you details of all the care available in that area.

thanks, that looks like a good place to start

so, perhaps unsurprisingly, my granny would much prefer someone who could visit daily, once or more realistically twice a day. rather than residential care.

If anyone has any recommendations of agencies or individuals who would do this I'd be most grateful.

You could look at King Edward Court in Herne Bay (so a bit out from Canterbury, but lots of the people who live there have come from Canterbury -- they are proper self-contained apartments with their own kitchens/lounges/bathrooms but there are also care staff on site who can get involved at whatever level is necessary depending on your level of independence. There is also a restaurant on-site for those who prefer it, and there are organised events (like summer fetes, Christmas parties, etc.) but there's no particular pressure to join in.

We never had much luck with agencies in Canterbury. Especially if taking medication on time is a significant concern, there just didn't seem to be anyone who'd actually manage to be there at the right time.

thanks, will take a look at herne bay for if she gets to the resi stage, the independence sounds good. we all wish she'd been persuaded to move somewhere like that years ago tbh.

hmm good to know that about agencies. surprisingly she's not on that much medication, warfarin and diuretics and painkillers is about it. I have no idea how time sensitive that lot is but will ask my mum. thanks. even without the medication I suspect my gran would prefer to know at least roughly when someone was coming though...

She doesn't need a nurse... just a nice person who doesn't mind helping her get dressed and put out food for her and stuff like that. It seems a shame that we are tied to care agencies (they seem to keep so much and pass so little on to the carer) but I guess we need the checks to have been done.
