List of schools that have expressed an interest in becoming an Academy

There is a list of schools that have contacted the Department for Education to express their interest in becoming an Academy - worth checking out to see if your child's school or potential school is on the list!

Was a bit weird at first as I know DCs federated primary school had applied for info, but they are in the jumbled bit of the list. Odd that they are separated by quite a bit, and I can't think that the two bits applied on separate days. Was surprised to see the senior school there, but they probably are also looking at the financial issue.
Was surprised to see a local Catholic school too, after what they were advised.

I can't get the links to work on the website. Do you know what format they are in?

snowlady · 25/06/2010 19:14

I would not read too much into this list. Apparently schools who asked for further information are registered as having shown interest, when in fact they only wanted information and haven't decided yet.

singersgirl · 25/06/2010 21:03

Yes, there's virtually no information about it unless you do express an interest, so it's difficult to make an informed decision without doing so.

GypsyMoth · 25/06/2010 21:05

our upper school is on there....but i dont understand enough about this

blametheparents · 25/06/2010 21:09

snowlady is right, you had to register an interest just to receive information.
In addition it was not made clear to the schools at the time that if they registered an interest this woul later be published.

BelleDameSansMerci · 25/06/2010 21:15

As an aside, you'd think the Department of Education would have someone who could sort a list into alphabetical order either under the school or the local authority. Surely it's just an Excel spreadsheet?!

southeastastra · 25/06/2010 21:18

i thought that belle

DinahRod · 25/06/2010 21:30

You could expect the majority of schools to at least request the information about the key change in education - this 'data' means nothing.

They are not that jumbled, they are alphabetical by Local Authority.

DS's potential high school is on there, but he is only 21 months old at the mo, and as we also have middle schools, high school is 12 years away.

RollaCoasta · 25/06/2010 21:42

How interesting .... several local state grammars are on the list, despite the following warning:

'In a statement the NGSA (National Grammar Schools Association) strongly advised grammar schools to be ?extremely cautious? as at present there are suggestions that academies may not be legally defined as ?maintained? schools. There are fears therefore that schools may lose their statutory protection of requiring a parental ballot before they are turned into a comprehensive. All academies to date have been all-ability intakes, there doesn't seem to be any provision for safeguards in order to turn grammars into academies....'

I would pmsl if the greedy grammars suddenly found they hadn't read the small print properly and had to accept 'all-ability intakes'. Bring it on!!!

DD's school has been accepted for the first stage, whatever that means. Got the letter home tonight.

hester · 25/06/2010 22:22

Yep, our school is there. At this stage they're just registering interest, aren't they? Not committing to following through.

montmartre · 25/06/2010 22:27

This explains it... I was rather at some of the schools listed... as an individual I had to give details just to find out more... and I haven't actually received anything yet either

violetqueen · 26/06/2010 13:39

bikerunski - perhaps I'm even more tired than I feel ,but if the schools are shown alphabetically by local authority ,why is the first local authority shown York ?

violetqueen · 26/06/2010 13:42

ok - I see ,schools that are outstanding and have registered an interest - all jumbled up and all over place .
Second list ,alphabetical.
Makes as much sense as the rest of my life at moment .

ivykaty44 · 26/06/2010 13:46
