DS is being assessed for second time in 18 months by Ed Psyc. Is this standard procedure?

DS was assessed mid way through Y2 by an ed psyc after completing reading recovery. The assessment showed he benefited from using overlays and DS now has tinted lenses in his glasses as the words become distorted and move about when he is trying to read. From what I remember his auditory and visual memory scores were about 7 out of 10.

He has done daily reading and we invested in a web based reading programme at home which he has had a lot of success with, although he is still not very fluent. His decoding is much better than it was but some days are better than others. He still get mixed up with the short words.

Today he has came home with a letter saying that following an initial assessment in school, DS may have a specific learning difficultly linked to reading and they wish to do further tests.

Can anybody give me further advice on what this might mean.

They did some kind of screening before. Maybe they want to do a full dyslexia type assessment? I would ask what kind of tests they are going to do, write it down and come back and ask (maybe in the special needs education forum). It should be something that is going to last a few hours.

Also your son is now older than 7 which is the age they start to assess for dyslexia etc. (Specific learning difficulties covers dyslexia etc)

Good luck.

I have spoken to DSs teacher today who explained that they gave all children in years 3-5 a simple test which highlights whether children might be experiencing some problems related to dyslexia. Following those tests they have decided to give DS a more extensive test which will pick up if he is dyslexic and in which areas.

Teacher said that DS was thought to have some mild symtoms of dyslexia which they first thorght might have been immaturities in his work.
