If you search on "room size per pupil uk regulations" there are at least a couple of useful documents (an NUT one and one from Hertfordshire LEA) they refer to some building regulations.

Yuck, I hope you're wrong. I hate having to cram 30 children into a tiny space.

RollaCoasta · 15/05/2010 18:42

Here you go:
The premises and equipment must be organised in a way that meets the needs of children.

In registered provision, providers must meet the following space requirements:

children under two years: 3.5 m2 per child;
two year olds: 2.5 m2 per child;
children aged three to five years: 2.3 m2 per child.
The provider must ensure that, so far as is reasonable, the facilities, equipment and access to the premises are suitable for children with disabilities.

The premises must be for the sole use of the provision during the hours of operation.

The provider must carry public liability insurance for the provision.

Hi the recommended class size is 54 square meters for a class of 30 children...

fisher123, let me know how you get on. My appeal is on medical grounds for my son (mobility issue) but like yours it's not an Infant Class Size appeal as they have a PAN of 40 (2 classes of 20). They are also claiming it's too small, however they are having a major extension and this has yet to be inlcuded in capacity assessment! Find out their net capacity, it may help with your appeal. Also find out whether appeals have been upheld for your preferred school in the past. Good luck !

Kimmy1979 · 16/05/2010 15:10

Just realised you are on Secondary thread so ICS appeal irrelevant- oops, very tired!!

fisher123 · 17/05/2010 15:48

the net capacity they say is 175 pupils. they are saying not all classrooms are the same size and the smallest when measured is in accordance with the department of education and employment guidance what ever that is and can only accommodate 25 they also had a new foundation stage built on about 3 year ago
