Any views on Montessori's?

Would just be interested to hear of experiences of others whose children attend Montessori Nurseries / Schools. Our son starts 2 short afternoon sessions a week in September and then when he is 2 1/2 will do 3 mornings a week. I have done quite a bit of reading up on the Montessori approach and like a lot of what they try and achieve. However, I have to confess that I am not feeling particularly enthusiastic about our local establishment.

The staff seem to be incredibly dictatorial in their approach and take themselves unbelievably seriously. At a parents evening last week, the headmistress solemnly instructed us that no child under 6 should be let near a computer and that she would also put television in the same category. One of the parents there said that with 3 children, she did sometimes need to resort to a video so she could get on with jobs etc. This was met with the response that they should consider moving in with another family in order to share childcare duties (!!!!). They made lots of other general pronouncements along these lines and I was left feeling a bit cross at what seemed like intrusion into people's parenting choices.

All in all, their programme sounds harmless enough but I can't help having some qualms about the place.

Hi Laalaa, you can do pretty much anything you like in terms of morning, afternoon or all day, depending on whether she has the space. Yes, it is term time only, though as she is also a registered childminder she did used to have a few in the holidays but I don't know if she does that now.

The two I looked after went to state school with absolutely no problems, and the other child I used to pick up sometimes went to private. Most of the children go onto state school, some went to state nursery at 4 as it is free, but some chose to stay until starting school because they were so happy there and the parents didn't want too many changes before 5 years old, particularly if they started at 2.5 years old as they could be on their third 'educational environment' if they did.

If you want to email me off this site go via my website here

Laalaa, how did you get on with the Montessori schools?

Can any one give a thumbnail sketch of how the methodology works? I had heard that Montessori teching is based on not praising children's work. Is this true, an what is the thinking?

Has anyone heard anything negative about Martyr's Green montessori nursery? I have placed my child's name to attend but pulled out when one of their ex-assistant's told me that their approach to discipline is time out - which occurs often and results in the 2-3 yr olds frequenty crying. Also she said they strap them into chairs to watch TV for an hour a day (and this is a reg. montessori school). It seems great in every other sense though. Any feedback would be appreciated!!

Why is the assistant an "ex" assistant? Could she be bitter? The bit about strapping the children into chairs to watch TV simply doesn't ring true. Not that I know anything about the nursery you mention.

Between them my 2 boys did at various times attend a pure montessori nursery and a nursery that called itself montessori but it was more of an amalgamation of the best bits of montessori and a traditional nursery. Obviously the former adhered to montessori philosophy quite rigidly but both were fantastic. I think this lady sounds like a bully and/or control freak and I'd avoid it like the plague.

The transition from montessori, with it's relative lack of structure and routine, may have been a little harder for my boys than other children from traditional nurseries and the 2 systems are not very compatible. However there were no discernable problems and I would still make the same choice. After all some children don't attend a nursery at all before going to school.

Duh, I've just noticed how old this thread is!!!!

Hi Harrysmum
Where is the nursery you go to?

Runoutofideas · 19/05/2010 07:05

Tiptoe - Harrysmum is probably about to apply for senior schools - the thread is ancient!
