Primary School:
Nursery and Reception are Foundation Stage
Y1 and Y2 is KS1
Y3,4,5 and 5 is KS2

Senior School:
Y7, 8 and 9 is KS3
Y10 and Y11 is KS4

Sixth Form:
Y12 and Y13 is KS5

Hope that helps

But to complicate things a bit - some areas have middle schools which are generally year 4 - 8, and then high schools from year 9 onwards.
GGCE year is generally year 11 (pupils aged 15/16) and then those that stay on do AS levels in year 12 and A2 in year 13. Eventually leaving with A levels at 17/18 (or equivalent in other qualifications)
Year 7 are 11 when they start and 12 when they finish!

Thanks that is very helpful

So, apart from GCSE year 11, AS year 12 and A2 Year 13

What are the other exams/tests they do and when?

(Am expecting dc3, ds1 is in Reception year - trying to work out schools/siblings etc)

They currently do KS1 SATs in maths and english in Year 2 (but these are primarily teacher assessed and might be scrapped).

Then KS ('Key Stage') 2 SATs in Year 6, ie last year of primary school, which are externally assessed but might be boycotted this year (oh and I think don't include science anymore but I asked my Year 6 DD and she said "I dunno" .

Oh and you might find they do 'optional' SATs in yrs 3,4 and 5 (so 'optional' that most schools do them) - but these are teacher assessed.

They have stopped doing KS3 SATs at 14 (Year 9?) so as far as I am aware it's nothing between KS2SATs and GCSEs.

Having said that, I think that they are also tested from time to time with NEFR tests, CATs tests, BATs tests and RATs tests - okay I made those last two up but they certainly get enough tests.

I've never understood that one of our local schools does that. doesn't it put them at a disadvantage when applying to senior schools?

Do they? I didn't know that. The private schools near us take them at 11 same as state so i guess that's why the preps go to y6. Don't you get people whose children are on a prep that goes to y6 but they wAnt them to go to one of the schools that take them later. Where do they go for 2 years ?

And of course years 12 & 13 are actually sixth form...

bellissima · 16/04/2010 09:03

fabhead - I think that if you are aiming for a school which only starts at 13 (probably a boys schools) you would move them to a prep that went up to Yr 8. A lot of girls 'public' schools - Cheltenham Ladies et al, have entries at both 11 and 13, so they can take girls from schools that go to Yr 6 or 8. Round here the boys' and co-ed preps tend to go up to Yr 8 and most girls to Yr 6, although there is one that goes to Yr 8 and some girls transfer there - another advantage is that you save two years of those 25k a year public school fees - even boarding at a prep is rather cheaper than that!

I still have problems - eg when touring round the local grammar school with DD this year - I'm having to translate Year 11 into 'the fifth form' in my head. Fortunately they still seem to use 'sixth form' from time to time.

abbierhodes · 16/04/2010 09:08

Don't assume that they'll only have exams in year 11 and year 13.Most GCSE and A level courses are modular, at least in part,so there will be exams from year 10 onwards every few weeks.

And by the time your little ones go through, sixth form will be compulsary...the current year 7 (and everyone after them) will have to stay in education until 18.

Here there are Lower, Middle and Upper Schools

Lower from Nursery/Reception to Y4
Middle from Y5 to Y8
Upper from Y9 to Y13
