KS1 SAT results v Teacher assessments

Got DS1 report today and it has the usual report format plus some Teacher assessments for Science, Maths, etc. It says the results he gained in the SAT tests were used to inform the Teacher assesments but they are not given. Is this common to other KS1 reports?

I'm a governor, at our last meeting the head said if parents ask for the test results they will be given them but no letter has been sent with the report saying this. I may be the only parent who knows.

Your lot seem to be making up the rules as they go along, figleaf - unless DS1 is in Y1? If he's in Y2 they have to be published, don't they?

And it was my understanding that they do Teacher Assessments first and then the kids do SATs.

I really dont know thats why Im asking the great MN. I asked her in the govs meeting wouldnt it be better to pop it on the report as most parents would want to know and she said she was sceptical that anyone would ask - could this be because she wasnt going to tell anyone they could?

We got year 2 results on sep sheet WITH the report

But others they don't give out

What mine have always had is one sheet giving their Levels (Teacher Assessment and SAT results), and another giving the results, in percentage tables, for the school this year and the country last year; these tables are also published in the Govs annual report and in the school prospectus.

Oh, end-of-year exam results - they don't give you those? Not even as a score, like 120?

That's what happens in our school - year 2 is published on report. All other years are not published and seems to depend on the individual teacher whether they will tell you.

They do voluntary SATS tests in the same week as Year 2 and 6

Ours have always been given their end-of-year marks too - I'd assumed all schools did that. Hm.

Mind you DS2 got a score in Y3, a SAT level in Y4, a score again in Y5 and a SAT again in Y6 so there was absolutely no way of telling how he'd done compared to the year before

But they do have to give you the SAT results for Y2 and Y6 - don't they???

This has happened nationally this year at KS1.

Y2 children still have to do the SATs assessments and tests, but the results of these are no longer the 'be all and end all', reported to LEA and parents - they are just used as another type of assessment, along with on-going marking and observations, that class teachers use to form their overall 'teacher assessment' levels - which is what is now reported alone.

I think the idea is to take some of the pressure off testing 6 and 7 year olds, and to try and make the tests more low key, and part of the normal structure of things (which can only be a good thing, in my humble opinion).

Taking off pressure is good bee3, yes you are right.

What are other Y2 parents going to do, ask for the test result or not? I dont know what to do, DS did quite well with the Teacher Assessment (L3 for everything except writing, this was 2B). Is the Teacher assessments likely to be higher than the test result?

Although the tests are now longer necessary to use, many teacher have chosen to use the standard tasks to inform their judgements but a teacher assessment is based on a whole year's performance and not just a single piece of work so should be the best indicator of child's strength in a particualr area.
Anyway what do they matter? Is your child happy? Are they sociable? Are they curious and healthy? Much much more important than any ridiculous level ascribed to them. Rememeber that these assessments value only what can be measured and lots of important things can't be easily measured....
