DD wants to do Classics I think Latin. Any views on relative difficulty, usefulness and standing with universities much appreciated.

Latin, Latin, a thousand times, Latin!
An A in Latin is SO much better than an A* in CC (IMHO).
I have a degree in Classics - for that you need Latin, and maybe Greek. If you don't want to do Classics at university, then CC may be interesting, but I still think Latin is more useful. I use mine everyday in some form (and, no, I don't teach it!)

Classics and Classical Civilisation are very different though. There is usually no language content in CC (or only a very little) and it's usually seen as less demanding (though if it's history you're interested in it could be a good choice).

If she wants to do classical or medieval history then Latin is useful because she'll have a greater understanding of primary sources rather than just relying on translations. If she's thinking of modern history, then obviously not so relevant.

I did Latin up to A level - it is really hard but I loved it. I still get a kick out of translating tombstones & monuments in churches, but I found it incredibly useful in getting to grips with the construction of other languages.

Latin deffo better than CC, but as a lot of independents (round here anyway) offer CC and not Latin, I would guess that CC wouldn't hold her back at all. Would still go v well with history.
