How to beat your dad at Chess is very good.

My DS loved "Fritz and Chester" computer chess games. You can choose different styles for the board and the pieces and it starts off with games for one piece at a time, so you learn the moves bit by bit, but (I think) you can go straight into games at different levels if you want.

I think DS was about 5 when got the software, and he still enjoyed the easy stuff, although he had actually learnt the basics with a real set before that.

ds1 enjoyed a chess game we got for his Nintendo DS.

But he could already to play.

For me the feel of the pieces is important. Get a good quality set, with full-size pieces and a nice board. Then start to play just with the pawns and the king. And gradually introduce the pieces one at a time, until they get the hang of the different moves.
