Child and Family torture; the wait for 11+ results

There's probably been many threads on this already, but I cannot believe that, here in the Midlands, they sit the 11+ first week in October, but do not find out about result until end of March.

That is family torture, pure and simple. House, career, any other life changing moves often depend on the result. I wouldn't be surprise to hear that 11+ related issues are often cited in divorce cases!

Why on earth do they take so long. It really is outrageous .

Any else feel the same?

If all your major life events rest on an 11+ result, then maybe you're getting things a little out of perspective?

I agree it seems unecessary to wait so long, but 'family torture?' Get a grip!

That's rather harsh violethill! I took the 11+ and it was horrible waiting for the results - because the good school was very good and the rest were dreadful so actually a lot of the rest of your life is resting on it. I imagine it's much the same now unfortunately. Give the op a break - she's having a tough time.

It does seem absolutely ridiculous that it takes so long. How can that be?

Titogovi · 30/01/2010 22:18

Don't know, am/was hoping that someone out there might be able to give me an answer. Any LEA/Senior Teachers types out there?

BTW violethill, you clearly know very little/next to nothing about a) my family and b) the schools in our area, but thanks for your advice anyhow, much appreciated...

I feel your torture.

Luckily for us, I can stick DS on a bus to a school I really want him to go to if he's stuffed up the exam (which I suspect he has)

It's the not knowing that is killing me.

I find out next week which junior school DS2 is going to, so why so long for the high schools?

Luckily DS1 is quite layed back about it.

Where I live, the tests are in December and the schools tell you your child's score and rank in January. You are not told for certain if your child has got in until March, but the rank gives you a good idea of your chances

There are 310 places so it is only the parents of the children who come 311-330ish who have to sit around for months wondering if someone else will turn down their place.

Perhaps someone should suggest to your LEA that they do something similar.

Its all a hideous nightmare. My DD has just had her letter of ranking, is not in the top flight so I am secretly gutted but keeping it all jolly on the surface. She will be going to a shit high school so am so upset for her. She is - so far - not too bothered. So I have to pretend to be fine with it too. Its hard to not think, I should have done more practice with her, started younger etc. But I can't change the result. Boo hiss.
OP hope you get a better outcome.

Here in Bucks you sit the tests beginning of October, get the result in late November but have to wait until March to know the allocated school. If you passed you will get a grammar school place - its not just the x hundred highest marks - but as the final decider on school allocations, after siblings etc, is distance then kids in some areas get into their first choice in some years and not in others. But even that is not as bad as waiting months for the actual result - you have my sympathy.
