sassy4 · 31/01/2010 21:22

Can you contact me via MN?

hbfac · 31/01/2010 22:57

Know v. little about schools around there other than that it might be an idea to choose a primary with Coopers (secondary) as your long-term goal. If that's an option?

That's just what I've heard ... no personal experience.

Isn't Havering the least enriched London borough? I've never been there but given how they enthusiastically vote Andrew Rosindell to parliament I'm imagining its a very Essex-girl type of place.

So not the sort of place where a) Mumsnetters live and b) the locals worry about things like "good-schools" (at least until the joys of diversity arrive properly).

So probably a nice place to live for the time being, anyway. But not so good for the hypocritical "avoid the darkies but make out like it's for our chidlrens education" discussions beloved of MN.

Hi OP

The Upminster Primaries are very good academically. They can be a bit pushy. Depends if you want to travel and whats important to you. Can't speak for Hornchurch but believe they are good too.

GYF, I finde your post offensive. You have never been to this area and yet feel qualified to offer your opinion about the area. I have lived in the borough all my life and whilst there are some areas where I would not choose to live, I am sure the same can be said of any area in the country. havering is not represented by only one MP. At the moment we have three! Andrew Rosindell is only one of them. At the next election, due to boundary changes, we will be reduced to two MPs. My own constituency, Hornchurch, is being absorbed into the other two : Romford and Upminster. I believe that The area the Op has said she is looking at, will com under the Upminster constituency. I may not agree with AR in many things, but I know that he is very well respected as a constituency MP and he is a local 'boy'. (My sister was in his class at school.)

In my experience the only 'Essex Girl' types, are those who have moved into the area from elsewhere, not the locals.
Aas to Havering not being the sort of place where Mumsnetters live, there are plenty of us locally.

The original post was about local schools. the following is from the Havering website and of course, you can look at individual schools' results on the web. But I would still recommend the OP goes to visit a few before deciding, as in my opinion, a good school is not just about getting the highest results. There are a number of schools in the area she stated and most of them are at least good.

'The national Key Stage 2 League tables for 11 year olds, published on Friday, 2 December show that Havering's performance is in the top six of all 150 national Local Education Authorities (LEAs).

This builds on the superb results of Key Stage 1 - Havering was second nationally overall and was top LEA in the country for reading - well above national averages and that of its statistical neighbours.

The tables were issued by the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) on Friday, 2 December are based on overall performance in English, Maths and Science for 11 year olds.

In terms of Level 4+, Havering has never been as far above the national average as this year. Havering is third in the country for English, sixth in the country for Mathematics and eighth in the country for Science. Overall Havering ranks sixth nationally.'

oops! typos!

hbfac · 02/02/2010 16:44

I think GYF was picked up from another forum during the "G*ry Haiku" storm.

Laughably incorrect comment about Havering.

Tinkerbel6 · 04/02/2010 13:42

Don't know much about hornchurch schools but the upminster schools are very good and know people travel there from hornchurch, and also neighbouring boroughs.

row78 · 09/02/2010 13:36

Hi sassy,

Are you looking for a catholic or non faith school?

sassy4 · 10/02/2010 16:43

I know Upminster Infant School is very popular and received outstanding in their OFSTED inspection, you could take a look there? It's very close to the tube station if you can't drive. It's also close to Cooper's and Coburn and Hall Mead Secondary schools, so it could well feed into those two, and they also have very good reputations.

Good Luck!

row78 · 10/02/2010 19:41

oh and welcome to the area!

babyjohn · 01/02/2012 20:06

hi moving to romford in 2 weeks from Ireland!!! around Harold Hill area, please and advice on schools welcome as my ds needs to start asap and i am clueless. Also any ifo on mom and toddler groups would be great as I have a 2 year old dd as well and would love to make new friends.

philnat · 05/06/2013 08:27

Hi,

I just moved to Rainham and the school I live opposite is Parsonage Farm does any one know what this school is like.

Thanks
Natalie

Whathaveiforgottentoday · 06/06/2013 21:19

Upminster schools are all generally good and I know Hylands (hornchurch/Romford border) has a good reputation. Nearer to the Elm park area I've heard good things about Scotts primary which I think is in south Hornchurch but I don't know anybody who goes there.

Babyjohn - some of the schools in Harold Hill aren't great so I would do some research. I haven't got any knowledge of particular schools.

GYF - I'm not easily offended but you managed it and your comments are incredibly inaccurate.

Whathaveiforgottentoday · 06/06/2013 21:21

I should have read the dates a bit as i've seen the original post is from ages back - sorry about hat.
Philnat - sorry don't know anything about parsonage farm.
