Muzzy - any good for learning French?

Wasn't sure where to put this - but we're going to be spending 4 months in France and I'd like the DD's to learn a bit of French before we go and I'd like to develop my French alongside them (at the moment I can order a coffee or a beer and that's about it!). We will be homeschooling during that time so they won't be at at school.

Does anyone know if the BBC Muzzy programme is any good? DD's are 8 and 5. Or would I be better off with something else?

TIA

It is very dated and expensive for what it is IMO.

See that's what I was concerned about. Even second hand on e-bay it's like 60 quid, I don't want to waste my money. Thanks - anyone else??

no it is shit

Expensive rubbish. Younger kids like it because it's a furry animal, that's all.

babbel is good (and free)

I don't think it's very good. My children liked watching it but didn't really learn any French from it. It's really expensive too.

I believed all the hype and got one on ebay years ago...
My advice would be not to bother.

Sorry, I just find the advert for Muzzy too annoying to even think about buying it.

My little girl goes to Le Club Francais which is one hour a week and fun and you get access to a website. It costs £4 a week.

Okay thanks all, I'll save my dosh then! Cheers. Sadly we live in the arse end of nowhere and there is no club or anything but they do learn a bit at school and I am signing up to Education City which as a French section in it so maybe that will do.

Watch dvds in french or get their favourite films in french from amazon.fr

They'll pick up the language through playing with other kids

We have Salut Sege - it's a heck of a lot cheaper, covers similar material see here and the songs are quite fun! I ordered muzzy but sent it back as it was very dated and sent me to sleep!

I can sing about cakes, apples and bread - always very handy (no beer or wine in the song though).

Most of the DVD is animated - french monkey called serge and an english parrot - there is some talking in each section about the topic - e.g. food, family members etc and then a song and then a video clip of real french children speaking french illustrating the topic just watched e.g. for food I think they were at a french market.

p.s. I did buy the dvd for the kids but they pay absolutley no attention to it whatsoever - I have learned a bit though!

We got it for DD; I don't think she learned any French from it but somehow it formed the basis for her favourite, longest running pretend game, loosely based on the characters, played out with me and various toy dogs So I suppose we got some value out of it!

I found there are loads of Peppa Pigs in French on You Tube - started with episodes I knew my DD had already enjoyed in English and she's now moving onto new ones, she's picking up some vocabulary (I've tested it out by asking questions) and it's good stuff as it's everyday situations. PP might be a bit young for your DDs but worth a try or something similar / more age appropriate?

DHs family is German and Austrian, MIL bought it for DD when she was little to learn German.
I thought it was pretty rubbish and she didn’t learn anything, despite her picking up quite a bit of Spanish from Dora.

Learn French with Paul Noble is very good. There is a children's version too. I got mine from Audible with my subscription. If you have never had Audible before (www.audible.co.uk) they give you one audio book free as a taster or maybe it's two. Get that and then cancel after. Download the app to your phone and you can have a French lesson anywhere.
