...and why is it making my DH so grumpy atm?

I would ask but we haven't seen much of each other recently and I didn't want my head bitten off when we did. He snarled at all of us this morning and went to school with a face like smacked arse.

Why?

P-scales are Pre National Curriculum levels.

P1-8 are below NC level 1.

Perhaps your DH is grumpy at having to assess children using these whereas previously he would have used the mark 'W' for Working towards NC Level 1?

I think he's grumpy because it's the first time he's had to do it and he's feeling stressed. I just wondered what they were. Thanks

It is often used for children with special needs.

Thanks bof.

He teaches in a special school so that makes sense.

I was told at school (where I work) that P scales are used for children who are off the Early learning Goals but not yet on the National Cirriculum levels. Was also told that children who have been in school for les than a year can't be on NC levels, but not sure why.

It isn't just SEN children on P scales when in Reception and Y1. We have a number of children.

p scales were introduced a few years ago so that there would be a system to show progression for children working below NC level 1. Before p scales, children would often stay on a level ie 'working below NC 1' for a v long time but with p scales progression is easily identified and demonstrated.

They're a great thing for these students (if you put much stock into assessment of course) as it measures and shows progress, instead of 'working towards level 1' for 2 school terms, they may jump from P4 up to a P8 in any given subject

I think they are great too - easy to use and give more meaning to 'working towards level 1'. They recognise the very important small steps that SEN children are making, which somehow values them more.
