What are you reading - to your 3-4 year old?

DS1 is 3.5 and suddenly seems 'between' stages in terms of the sorts if books he wants at the moment.
This week's selection has included:
Dr Seuss poems
Thomas the Tank Engine (ladybird book size)
Ladybird books: Rapunzel, 3 Billy Goats Gruff, Snow White etc
Monsters Inc Annual from last Christmas
Factual book about rockets/planets/space
Story about jumbo Jets
'Usborne' Farmyard Tales/ Train Tales Series

We go to the library and get a mix of things, but I usually like to steer him towards things I think I'd like to read to him (as opposed to coming home with 5 Thunderbirds videos... )

Interested to know what your 3 & 4 year olds are reading?

We're going on a bear hunt (Rosen and Oxenbury) is his absolute favourite - we have to put on wellies and go on bear hunts every afternoon.
The pooh bear stories at bedtime.
the Little yellow digger

My ds who is 3.9 loves the Hungry Caterpillar and also the Mr Men Books. He giggles away at them.

OwlMother · 03/06/2003 20:48

My son loves anything by Julia Donaldson, The Elephant and the Bad Baby (not brilliantly politically correct but hey!) The little Red Train Stories by Benjamin Blathwayt, Dogger, Blue Kangaroo Books, Bear Hunt by Matthew Rosen....
He is only three and a bit so these might not be what you're after but hope this helps a bit!!

willow2 · 04/06/2003 14:27

Harry and Dinosaurs series, Angelina Ballerina (the drawings are so intricate, can spend ages talking about everything you can see) Mr Men books (can't believe I liked them so much as a child, they are so dull) Richard Scary and loads of other books from the Bookpeople.co.uk

nerdgirl · 04/06/2003 15:48

Dr. Seuss and anything by Lauren Child or Sandra Boynton. Oh and the Mr. Men too.

Britabroad · 04/06/2003 23:38

Any of Julia Donaldson's books my 2 1/2 year old loves

Gruffalo
Room on the Broom
Smartest Giant

MY 5 year still loves them too

So far I've had to read 'the Tiger who came to tea' every night for two weeks. Strange because my sister insisited on my dad reading it every night for ages when we were little.

We like Hairy MacLairy and Slinky Malinki books. Especially enjoy acting them out.

Twink · 15/06/2003 22:07

For those of you who have Thomas fans, the Book People are doing an offer for the full set of original stories (hardback in a presentation case) for £30. We got this last time the offer was on and it's a really good buy.

Sobernow - we got 'Eat your peas' from the library this week .. I nearly wet myself laughing. Funniest children's book I've read in ages! I'll have to look out for the other two you mentioned now.

AliH · 09/09/2003 09:50

I love The Queen's Knickers, and 'Cinderella's Bum (and other Bottoms', particularly the bit about trumpets and clarinets!

We too loved the Tiger who came to Tea - strange to think it was written so long ago! I had to resort to the tape when I was reciting it in my sleep (well, almost!)

Just discovered Room on the Broom, courtesy of a friend!

Boe · 09/09/2003 10:23

The Selfish Crocodile/Oscar & Arrabella/All the bloody Mr Men & Little Miss books and a set of fairy tales I bought from M&S which are really good and have words for her to learn at the back.

Jenie · 09/09/2003 11:05

My dd loves anything by Shirley Hughes and the a book called The Time It Took.... can't remember who it's by as I've leant it to a friend. Dd says that it reminds her of Ds (wonder why)

kmg1 · 09/09/2003 12:18

Jenie - 'The Time it took Tom' is another Nick Sharratt book - it's great isn't it?

Jenie · 09/09/2003 12:26

Very funny book, I like the ones that we can all laugh at. Ds (16 months) joins in with the laughing parts.

Angeliz · 09/09/2003 13:32

i USED to love "naughty Amelia Jane" books by Enid Blyton when i was little and have just started reading one to dd 2.6 and she likes it i think! All about toys coming to life so a good imagination one...

jodee · 09/09/2003 14:01

Just bought The Tiger Who Came to Tea and also Dogger on Ebay, looking forward to reading them myself!

Jenie · 09/09/2003 14:07

Dd loves the dogger stories she has the Shirley Hughes collection and many varied other single books. I think she's a great author. Dd always seems to find something to grab hold of her imagenation within each story or poem.
