Booze at School?

At DS1's sports day on Friday, after all the events, some of the big kids (11-year-olds) brought around glasses of Pims for everyone.

I was pretty startled by this. In Canada, I'm pretty sure they wouldn't assume every parent drank alcohol (other juices etc were available, but the "default" was Pims). I'm very sure they wouldn't have 11-year-olds handing out booze. In fact, I'm pretty sure they wouldn't serve booze at all, at an afternoon event, with kids present.

I'm not really opposed, just surprised. Is this normal in the UK?

Out of curiousity, would you be uncomfortable if your kids served you and your friends drinks in your home? I was taught to pour drinks and serve them from about age 8 (and went to a school where we handed out the booze to parents).

Hmm dont know. It seems so logical when you put it like that. Now I'm confused.
Yes, I would be happy for DS to pour drinks and hand them around to my friends and myself (he has a mean way with a corkscrew LOL). I guess its the public nature of it, on school premises, and I dont mean to sound hypocritical here. That doesnt mean I'm all for keeping it hidden, its just something about school. I know we have some parents who dont think alchol should be on school premises at all. On the other hand its a great way to raise much needed money.

I think I need to resolve this in my head, as I'm not bothered by the thoughts of when we go to opera in the park with a bottle of wine and a picnic.

Tricky...
