Learning the piano at 37?

This is one of the things I have wanted to do since I was a child. Although I enjoy listening to music and singing am I too old to start learning piano at 37? Has anyone else done this and how was it for you?!!

I started to learn at 39 at the same time as my children in order to encourage them to practise. They soon over took me!
I also had some clarinet lessons again to get me back into playing again.
I had a really nice lady who plays in the LSO come to the house, we just played duets together for fun, it was great, I did the same with piano, played a lot of duets, they were really simple but sounded good!

I enjoy playing it but my repertoire is very limited, for some reason I can play hymns very well!!

Go for it, I did it for enjoyment and hope to continue lessons again sometime, it is also one of DH's ambitions to learn to play the piano.

Hi Genghis
Go for it girl! Like you I too always wanted to learn how to play the piano and started lessons when I was 32 (3 years ago). I can't pretend it's easy but I have found a fantastic teacher (Tonbridge area) who is incredibly inspiring. She teaches me both classical and jazz/blues. Perhaps because I had wanted to learn for so long I don't mind practising although the amount varies according to family commitments and if I get shouted at for making too much noise! I've got up to about grade 4/5 and intend to keep going until I feel I could pick up anything and just play (which is a lot harder than I dreamed).
You are certainly never too old. Hope you decide to give it a go, no regrets.

there's a great book by John Holt called Never Too Late, about his experiences of learning the cello - i think he was in his 40s when he started - it's a brilliant book. Go for it, you are never too old!

go for it - my mother has bought a piano and intends to learn it when she retires at age 65....

Right, that's decided then! I'm phoning a teacher recommended by a friend today. I love singing and my ambition is to be able to accompany myself (IFKWIM!) - even if it's to Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.

Thanks all,

GhengisMonkey!

PS I've changed my name
