Year 6 children - specialist arts school

DD is, apparently, quite talented in art. There is a specialist art school near here which has a number of places for kids who show talent, subject to an art exam.

The exam requires the child to make a still life and draw it in charcoal; to make a sculture out of 'found objects'; and to write a critique of a narrative picture ( discussing tone, line, colour, etc).

What sort of standard would you reasonably expect from a year 6 child? What do you think your year 6 child could do?

I think the best answer to your Q would be to ask the school if you could see examples of the best entries they've had in the past?
Does your DD even want to attend a specialist art school?

DS is Yr5, fairly bright, and likes drawing/art. I guess he'd make a detailed pic with details too small to see properly, some kind of violent military/Star Wars theme to it for the charcoal -- like a comic book. I can't imagine him doing a sculpture, alas! And his critique would be short and mono-syllabic because he doesn't care about other people's ouvre.

Yes she does. I wouldn't shove her in that direction, myself!

She's G&T in literacy so I'm not worried about her ability to express herself. She's had no experience of doing an art critique, though, and I don't really know what sort of words they use. Still, I guess loads of kids wouldn't either.

DH is saying proudly that he got art A level and will therefore 'coach' her. Oh dear, she doesn't stand chance!
