Recommended reading for work in secondary schools?

OK I want to do a bit of homework, and some background reading before I start this new job , (whilst I still have some time and some energy!).

What are your best suggestions, particularly in the area of classroom management and behaviour/discipline?

Sounds like a crap title but it is a serious book by a regular contributer to the TES.

I can recomend all sorts of learning theory stuf which is intersting but is, to be brutaly honest, zero help in the class rooms!

I've read quite a bit of learning theory stuff, which I do find fascinating, but it's the practical stuff I want to read up on.

Certainly at first I will have loads of opportunity to observe experienced teachers, and I think the more I know about what to look out for, the more I will actually notice and learn from iyswim!

Would agree with hmb - must have read hundreds of books for my pgce, primary conversion and MA. All fascinating theory, but nothing compares with watching a gifted teacher at work. I'd ask to see some very experienced teachers - it will be good for you and a compliment to them. Despite teaching since 1986, I've learnt loads from dd's fantastic Y6 teacher. Good luck with the job.
