Oh to reach in a school with parents like all of you ;)

A handshake and thanks for....improving confidence, spelling, socialisation skills, etc, etc would be lovely.

blackrock · 08/07/2009 10:17

Oh dear not fit for the task. 'teach' was the word for which I was grasping.

onelittletreasure · 08/07/2009 13:55

Sorry to be a grump, but why do teachers need presents?!

bumpybecky · 08/07/2009 14:09

well I've got 3 children at school / preschool nad between them with teachers, TAs, music teachers etc we've bought presents for 16 [gulp]

with that many it wasn't going to be a big present each, but we've managed a box of chocolates each (Divine after dinner mints) from the 99p shop!

we're making cards too, so not too expensive

MIAonline · 08/07/2009 16:53

onelittletreasure, I don't think it is that teachers need presents, it's that the parents want to give presents as a token of their appreciation.

LynetteScavo · 08/07/2009 18:39

Hmmmm...DS2's teachers (job share) might get a card...he would love to give a pressent, but TBH they have been, um.....average. Actually a small box of chocs will be easier than trying to write something warm in a card.

DS1 definately doesn't want to give anything to his teacher. I will be buying her something, and writing her a letter of thanks, as well as his head teacher, who has been fantastic. I'll probably go for a decent sented candle for teacher and TA.

onelittletreasure · 08/07/2009 19:14

Letter of thanks sounds good. Dont mean to be a misery, just that lots of people in other jobs do great things too (police, nurses, even bus drivers) and no-one seems to feel need to give them a present.

My little one's nowhere near that stage yet, so maybe when she is I'll be in the card shop too!!

FabBakerGirlIsBack · 08/07/2009 19:15

Cadelaide I am the same as you. DS's teacher, fab. DD's, awful.

LynetteScavo · 08/07/2009 19:45

I'm given the odd bottle of Blossom Hll in my line of work....and I reckon midwives don't go short on chocolates!

crankytwanky · 08/07/2009 20:20

Midwives would fail to function if the choccie supply was switched off.

Seriously, folks, you don't want to rock up at the unit in the mid afternoon if the MW's haven't had any Miniature Heroes thrown their way. They'll all be hypoglycemic and grumpy.

DamonBradleylovesPippi · 08/07/2009 22:04

When I was the child it used to be a collection thing like BosoirAnna said. It makes more sense tbh as I can imagine the poor teachers submerged in scented candles. I'll suggest it next year.

Unlucky me ther are 6 teachers at Dd's nursery class as they are PT or job share. Think will do some italian choc plus note from us and card from DD.

Poppity · 09/07/2009 01:12

Mine have just moved schools. They will only have been there half a term, so teachers, what should I give?

I was thinking of a joint charity card for the staff from each class(there are a lot as it's mixed ages, I'm not even sure of all their names yet). The school is very in to it's fair trade etc, but as someone mentioned earlier, am not sure how well these are received?

MarmadukeScarlet · 09/07/2009 01:33

I'm a bit hacked off, I gave my (decent sized donation as teacher and several floating TAs etc) to the class kitty for present purchasing a few weeks back.

Term ends Friday lunchtime. Rep handed money back yesterday, it was decided when DS was off sick a week or so ago, that all monies were to be returned as no one could agree what was appropriate!

I'm flat out at mo, hence being up ,ahem. working at this time - do I look like I've got time to go to the shops?

I expect I'll make a big batch of fudge and wrap it with pretty paper and ribbon.

ottersRus · 09/07/2009 19:15

What is a class rep? Is it a private school thing?

MarmadukeScarlet · 10/07/2009 00:24

I think some other schools around here (maintained mainstream) have them but they are called something else, but yes DS' school is private.

Have just made 6lbs of fudge, my arms ache!

merrymonsters · 10/07/2009 14:05

Class reps represent the PTA for a particular class. It's not a private school thing. They organise evenings outs, do a contact list, do present collections, stalls at fairs etc.

Spidermama · 10/07/2009 15:05

I have four children who have so many teachers between them I don't even know half their names.

I am so peeved that I have to spend such a massive chunk of my life in the coming fortnight going to 2 x end of term shows, 3 x school fayres, 3 x sports days, 2 x open days ... not to mention the current rash of laser parties and football parties. [grr]

I don't feel like giving any presents to anyone. Actually there are two teachers and one dinner lady who have been outstanding. They will receive a loaf each of my home made bread if I can fit it in between committments.

MarmadukeScarlet · 10/07/2009 16:17

Thank you merry monsters, same function then - I had always presumed all schools had them, seems a sensible way to organise things.

ottersRus · 10/07/2009 21:40

No, Marmaduke, all schools don't have class reps, hence my previous question. In fact I don't think I know any that do.

UnquietDad · 11/07/2009 14:07

I always think it's a bit show-offy and unnecessary...

piscesmoon · 11/07/2009 14:22

'but why do teachers need presents?! '

They don't need them-no one needs a birthday present. Don't give one if you don't want to. I liked giving one to my DCs teachers-I think they deserved it.

foreverchanges · 11/07/2009 19:57

i went to a fair today and after lots of tasting chose enough home made jams and chutneys to go round teachers teaching assistants and even the 2 office staff(they looked after ds when he was ill at school)
i thought id let them choose themselves out of a big basket

i dont usually get pressies but this thread pressured my conscience

only trouble is i forgot the head missie who was extra nice to me last time i saw her(she is not usually nice at all) never mind sure she earns enough to buy herself something nice !
