Are there any good state schools in Greenwich/Blackheath?

Dh may be applying for a job in London shortly with the company he already works for. One area under consideration for us to move to would be Greenwich or Blackheath.

Does anyone have any recommendations for schools? I would need both primary and secondary. I doubt very much would could afford private for 2 dc.

There are lots of good state primary schools. Halstow in Greenwich is particularly liked, and John Ball in Blackheath is popular. There are many others too (including faith schools), and there are very few primary schools to avoid.

For secondary level you do need to be much braver, because there are no Greenwich schools with fantastic results. Only the faith schools have good results eg. St Ursula's does well but is Catholic and girls only. I like the look of Thomas Tallis best of all, because many of the children seem calm and well behaved. It only gets 45% A-C, but does better in the sixth form and is very arty. John Roan has recently come out of special measures and has a new head in post. Things seem to be improving there. Blackheath Bluecoat is a school which still seems to have problems. I do not know anyone who has children there.

Many local parents send their children out of the borough to Bexley and Bromley grammars for secondary. The grammars get above 99% GCSE A-C and excellent A'Level results because they are selective at 11.

Thank you so much Madsometimes that does help a lot.

Halstow we had heard of and seems to have good ofsted but dh was worried because of the side of Greenwich it seems to be on.

most of the primarys are good I think. As already commented secondary schools are more of a challenge - Thomas Tallis is reasonably popular though. Blackheath Bluecoat is undersubscribed - but it does have a new head who has come from a very oversubscribed school in Wandsworth and seems to be making a real difference - depending on the age of your children it might be a real option by the time they get to 11. Alternatively there are the bexley grammars which if you live on the right side of the borough could be very real options for you.

Thank you too Mrs Wobble.

I would move tomorrow to Greenwich if I could, we have just spent all weekend there. Even signing the petition to stop them closing the park for the Olympics!

It's just a waiting game now.

Halstow is excellent and in an ok part of greenwich - albeit a bit away from the main centre. it's near a station as well (westcombe park?) - but you do have to live within about 250m of the school to get in??

there is also james wolfe which is nr the main greenwich br station - gets a good write up?

secondary schools - dont think any of the comprehensives get good reports?

I think Coopers School in Chislehurst is on a bus route from Blackheath? It's a good school but of course you'd be out of catchment so I'm not sure how possible it would be to get in.

It's probably a bit late now, but another one you should consider is Meridian School, on the north eastern corner of Greenwich Park, by the river (next door to the Naval College). Meridian's fab - my two boys are there and thriving. It's a very creative schools with a lovely friendly atmosphere.

We are planning to move to Greenwich. my options are Kidbrooke or Blackheath.

I'm looking for good comprehensive schools. Im not too inclined towards grammar or private ones.

I would need both primary and secondary as my son is 8 and my daughter 12. Which ones would you ll recommend.

TJsAunt · 15/11/2018 15:13

this is a v old thread but some of the advice still holds.

Kidbrooke/Blackheath wise Wingfield Primary is on the up as nit has a whole new housing development near it. Brooklands is also a great little school but usually quite oversubscribed. John Ball is in Blackheath and has a good reputation. Brinidishe in Lee Green is also v strong.

Tallis is the only comprehensive in Kidbrooke. There are others nearby - John Road, Eltham Hill etc - but Tallis has a stronger reputation I think and has been completely rebuilt since this thread started!

Khash · 15/11/2018 16:35

Thank you Tjs Aunt. How is Harris Academy as a comprehensive or St.Thomas More Catholic comprehensive? Would you have any idea! Thanks

puzzledlady · 19/11/2018 10:57

I’m in greenwich - our friends out their children in

James Wolfe
Invicta
Meridian

They all seem very happy.

TJsAunt · 19/11/2018 11:16

St Thomas Moore probably edges it because it has a wider catchment and is perceived as better because it's a church school. Don't know that either have great results TBH?

Catchments are pretty tight generally. If you're in Kidbrooke then you'd be unlikely to get John Ball primary in Blackheath and a definite no for any Greenwich schools. The Tallis catchment has definitely shrunk too.

Hello there,
I am also considering to move to Greenwich area and which area is good to move in Greenwich for school matters.

I had some research already and like both of Millennium primary school and Halstow. However, both of their catchment areas are quiet small like 0.2ml. Therefore, I would like to consider our backup plan too.

Which one do you recommend to us?
Any good catholic schools?
Any other great state schools?
What about private schools in Greenwich?

Many thanks.

MrsPatmore · 19/12/2018 17:21

There is a catholic primary on the Blackheath/Charlton borders, I think it's called Our lady of grace? Invicta and Sherrington schools are also close by and the catchments aren't quite as tight as Halstow.
Best independent school is Blackheath Prep but Colfe's is fairly close by, as is The Pointer School.

sasa88 · 19/12/2018 21:39

Thank you Mrs Patmore!
It's a great help for us to understand better about good schools.
If you know the catchment areas of Invicta and sherrington schools, could you kindly share with me please?

Many thanks and have a wonderful holiday season!

sasa88 · 19/12/2018 21:44

woops! I found the chatchment areas info.
Thank you.

Hi everyone

I have just relocated to the UK and am looking for schools urgently for year one and year three. Is the above suggestions for the Greenwich area still relevant?

I’m looking for a property for great schools for the kids and don’t want to commit to one if they aren’t in the catchment area for good schools. Any help is really appreciated.

Lightsabre · 23/05/2019 10:25

Maybe contact the primary education department for Greenwich Council for up to date information.
