Ok dug this one myself hand up.
Ds (4) was sitting in the car going I know everything, kids know everything. After 15mins of this I snapped and said ok so if you know everything then you know what the square root of 16 is.
quiet. What's square root.
Sigh in order to understand understand what a square root is you need to know what squaring a number is. When you square a number you times it by itself. Do you know 2 time 2 is.
4
Ok so 2 squared is 4 and 4 times 4 is 16, so 4 squared is 16. whats the square root of 16.
Silence
The square root of 16 is 4 because 4 times 4 is 16 and 4 squared is 16. Do you know what the square root of 4 is.
Silence.
What is 2 times 2
4
so 2 squared is 4. So the square root of 4 is ..

  1. I know everything.
You ever heard of pyramid numbers? 1,3,6,10 they are pyramid numbers thats hard. Silence

Thing is he is a high input kid and I often get caught on hope. Was being flipant with my response to shut him up but ended up teaching him something he will probably pester me about again later.

Can anyone give me some more age appropriate discussion topics as I don't think great on the spot and need a VERY long list of bits.

Have tried the if you could do anything go any where what would you do thing. His answer "school". He hasn't started and going to be disappointed.

Actually its not the attention thats the pain its the level of input. checked with library - we currently have 40 books out (only one is for me) and he lives in a mini library. am wondering if ed pscy route way to go ... maybe could define better what dealing with... grasping for straws

ds1 has AS/TS and gets "stuck" on a topic - I used to end up having long, circular conversations with him which didn't do anything to help "unstick" him. He sees a lovely psychiatrist at CAHMS who said that what he needs at moments is for me just to put an end to the discussion, so now I put my hand up, say "stop" and tell him I'm not prepared to carry on - and to my amazement, it works! He still gets stuck on things, but I'm no longer helping to perpetuate it

that worked for us too. we combined it with a timer and alloted slots for obsession. he is more generalise in his obsession now:-he wants to know everything

It's the level of input that I meant - couldn't find the words. You can't fob them off, you can't do it half thinking - it's mentally knackering!

Oh yes, but am going to have sold my soul to my sister before he gets to school at this rate. She was going to babysit for an hour / hour and half so I could rest. This was a 1.30pm. I got woken up for tea at 6pm and discovered that she had gotten soaked playing in garden with water. Definetly above and beyond! Am speaking to school tomo so hoping that can get some sensible advice

I have a DS with similar problems we use a Nintendo ds with Brain trainer and a new maths one just out - buy headphones though!

welshwoman how old is your ds and how did to get around the being rough/taking apart issues or was this not a problem with your ds?

School said to get work books from Smiths and work through them in order and they will deal with what they get - he is already earmarked for an IEP and possible G&T register. Depends where he falls when they benchmark him. There is also talk of assessment by an ed psyc after the first half term. I would really like to know what i am dealing with high IQ with SN or SN with high IQ and how to help him. So i am happy but ex is upset that ds can tell you what the different components of blood are and their basic jobs.
