how to handle move from private nursery to primary school

My son is currently at a private nursery, and is due to start school in september.
obv if he was going to a regular pre-school or a school nursery he'd have the 6 week summer holiday before starting primary school. but as he's in a private nursery I have the option of keeping him there right up until he starts school.

what do you think is best? I feel like he should maybe have a couple of weeks off at least, at the end of August before starting school because otherwise it might be a bit weird going to nursery one week and then school the next?

or, is it a total non-issue that I am over-thinking???

Was in the same position last year with dd1

In the end kept her there with a week off before starting school

It worked out well

Was nice to have the break before school (I had the week off too )

But she still had the routine of nursery, which she enjoyed

I was about to agree that it was non-issue that you are overthinking

But, DD is in a similar situation but her nursery closes for two weeks in august which coincides with the last two weeks before she starts school. I think that would probably work quite well as she'll have a two week break before starting school so time to prepare for the change.

doesyour child go every day? that would be one factor for me - mine goes to private nursery 3 days a week and i would switch it to five half days nearer the time so she gets used to going every day.

otherwise, just a holiday to buy new uniform, get rested etc would be lovely

If it was me, I'd arrange for a couple of weeks holiday for my benefit, otherwise I think the weeks will tick by, nursery will merge into school and you'll suddenly wake up and think "help - he's at school - where did the time go!".

But if that's a major headache from a work point of view, no need to stress about it.

And do check with the school when his actual start date it. Most of them start in shifts and he may not be right at the beginning of term, which could really mess up your planning.

thanks for the thoughts, I think we'll prob go with just a couple of weeks off before he starts just to give him a break.

he does 3 half days atm

no, i don't work, so can do whatever is easiest/best for him luckily.

good point about checking the actual start date though!
we have a whole load of meetings and visits with the school planned for June/July so will find out then I guess

Have been warning people about unexpectedly late start dates ever since DD1 had a shocking 11 week summer holiday, due to nursery finishing early and school not letting her start till the third week of term. Let me tell you that was a LOOOOOOOOONG summer!

We also had a week's holiday between DS finishing nursery and starting school.

As well as giving him a break it also meant we saved a week's fees .

Have you definitely had your starting arrangements through from the school? Many friends have left their child in nursery through to Sept/Oct because they weren't going to be at school full time for ages. Don't assume that she will be starting on the first day of term. In some schools the teachers do 2 weeks of home visits and then start the class in small groups, slowly building up to the full class.
