Have problem, my son was born in August, 10 weeks premature. He is at school, I found out he has been called special needs. School seems to overpower him, he get very distressed, it seems he was expected to to be able to read and write, he is very young, am very concerned for him. Will it get easier as he gets older.

When you say he's been called special needs, do you mean by the school or by other children in a derogatory way? Have you spoken to the school about this?

Ds is end of June birthday, 7 weeks prem, developmental delays. When he started school there seemed to be a huge gulf between the younger ones and the older ones in the year. Now we are in the third term the gulf is less noticeable. There was a real mix of abilities too. Some could already read and write and others hadn't even held a pen properly before. It all evens out.

Who has called him special needs and why? It sounds as if it must have been an adult as it isn't something a 4 yr old would say. I would want to know who and why.

When ds started school his nursery sent a report of what he could and couldn't do and I had to do the same. I wrote about the difficulties he had and the reasons for them in detail so his teaching staff would understand when he had problems. They have been very supportive and reassuring.
