I don't mean 999, I mean one where you can program in one number, say, (probably MY mobile!) that a DC can still call (reverse obviously) in an emergency if the phone has run out of credit.

DS1 will be walking the 200m to and from a new primary school in Y6 next year. I need for him to be able to have contact with me esp as he will be home alone for 20 mins whilst I fetch DS2.
Thanks

0800 Reverse (whatever numbers the word reverse uses that is) will work from any network. Will he be taking his mobile toschool - will school allow this? Otherwise why can't he phone you from your landline at home?

The idea is he will have contact from the moment he leaves the school gates to arriving back at the house. The school allow phones, they just have to be kept in the office which is fine. You can't heavily promote a 'Walk To School' policy then not allow a child the ability to call someone IF there's an issue, really, can you?

I was wondering who the companies where who have this 'one stored emergency number' feature on their phone deal. I know it costs (as does reverse!) but I want to keep it simple as DS1 will be 10.

"without" me

DS1 is of an age where he sets off with his mates on bikes from time to time, ranging the estate where he current school is situated on a weekend. The phone isn't only for school travel.

Yes, I cycled 1.5 miles alone on country roads at the age of 8 to and from my village primary. That was then, this is now.

Anyone?

Don't!!! My dd did this from the phone box on the way home. It cost, wait for it £3.95 each time,,,,,

Instead, get a free Orange sim card( or buy an Orange phone) You register for the "reserve tank facility" and if you run out of credit, call 450 and it will allow you up to £2.50 of credit. enough to call home etc in an emergency. An 11 year old will be able to do that easily.

Oh and yes, i used to walk home from school etc without one, with a 2p in my pocket to call in an emergency......

Is that on a particular named 'plan' with orange, risingstar? Or is a facility they offer any orange customer?

Hi, sorry for so longto come back, no I think ti is available on all payg plans with Orange. Have just found it, it is indeed fab!

Whilst I also disagree with the issue of 'need' you may be interested in the O2 'lend us a quid' on PAYG. You dial 4444 and select option 4 (I think) and they lend you £1 of call/text time which is deducted from your next top up. If you top up within 7 days it costs nothing after that there is a small charge.
