I'm currently working as a slave childminder but have an nvq3 in childrens care learning and development. My ds starts full time school in Sept and I am looking into doing the above which will enable me to work in schools term-time. I love working with children but hate the pittance that chidminding brings in. Has anyone done this and can you give me any advice on where to start. I am 'socially' classed as middle aged and think this may impair my chances of getting on a course. Advice welcome please

I don't think it would get in your way - on the positive side you are considered experienced and that is what the current market seems to be looking for imho. Go for it! Apply for a few posts, and how about you register with a supply agency and test the water, whilst you still have the option of childminding/slavery to add to it - if that's an option?

Atm in this county HLTA is an accreditation rather than a qualification. So you have to be working in a TA job and developing further skills, taking on more responsibility. HLTA status acknowledges this, and equips you for taking on further roles (and earning slightly more dosh).

I gained HLTA status last year and am happy to answer any questions you have.

Generally getting into support work is easier in secondary than in primary school, and usually slightly better paid.

underpaid, it is as Roisin says. But have to say you won't early squillions as a TA either. I was an LSA and took home 800 pounds a month after tax, and i was on a slightly higher rate. And also, once you have your accreditation, you will not automatically get the higher rate of pay, you would have to prove you were using the skills in class you had gained on the course...

I worked as a HLTA.
The Open University do a Level 4 in Supporting Childrens LEarning in Primary Schools. I did their other level 4 course. They are accredited and accepted just in case you're interested.
You have to be working in a school though. Sound advice from everybody else - dip your ties in the water (watch for the sharks)
TA work is very varied - at least mine was and covered pretty much everything from supporting kids with special needs to having charge of a class. Great fun - not great money but FAB HOLIDAYS
