choosing A levels

Thinking of English Music Physics Sociolgy and Law for AS but worried these are all (bar physics) considered "soft". Looking at Cardiff Bath and UEA post 18 for Music or Social Anthopology. As far as I can tell only Cambridge and LSE publish undesirable A levels. Is there an unwritten bias for the above subjects from anywhere else?

eng music and physics are not soft options
have you had a look at www.thestudentroom.co.uk

there is load of information there on alevels

my dd is keen to do music and french at uni

don't think bath does a music course does it?

crumpet · 15/04/2009 15:19

Law A levels not rated by law firms or by law degree courses, but you may not be heading in that direction anyway.

Music is not deemed a soft A level. It is pretty academic.

English Language is not as "highly regarded" as Eng Lit - which are you considering.

DD wanted to do the combined Eng Lang/Lit but her school persuaded her Lit would be better.

Music A level is hard!

Do the Uni's not state which A leles they would prefer (like Cambridge does a required/recommended list for each course)?

Agree with others, Music, English and Physics definitely not 'soft'.

Would avoid Law. If you actually want to go into law as a career you're better off doing a traditional subject.

You are right about Bath not doing music but their sociology course seems quite interesting and possibly a second option. Not going down the lawyer route and the A level law would be just for interest. He's on a music scholarship and wants to continue but thought taking another subject would be less narrowing for a future career path

just noticed this which may be of interest timesonline.typepad.com/schoolgate/2008/08/which-a-level-s.html

thanks crumpet Looks like ds is ok for most of his choices then and might be persuaded to avoid law if the university he wanted to ain for was particularly averse to it

Look at subjects that the student enjoys/will enjoy

Consider the career options

Pick the AS and then A2 subjects

Firm up the chosen university courses

Make a shortlist of universities based on campus visits and details of the courses on offer.
