Meeting with HM re bursary, what can I expect?

I finally snapped, swallowed my pride and made the call. He was lovely and said that I should come in to discuss getting a discount on fees.

What can I expect to get?

I am in a right state over this.

No one here can tell you what to expect. Bursaries are very individual things. Also, parents who are in receipt of bursaries are usually contracted not to talk about them with anyone else.

Just be honest in the meeting, and don't discuss the outcome with anyone.

Good luck - was just thinking this morning as listening to radio about trying to haggle for a discount on son's future school fees. Good luck!!!!!!

wahwahwah · 14/04/2009 18:11

Sigh. He said that bursaries were buggers to apply for and to tear up the latest invoice as he would discuss a discount.

I can't stop crying. It is horrible how things can all just hang together by a thread, isn't it?

I was wondering... 5% off, 10%, 15.....?

Poor you - i am very worried about how we will afford it (mainly through equity on house). I have no advice as am not yet that far down the road (we are paying for my son to go for secondary and to repeat his last year of primary). I hope you get all you need from the bursar.

stillenacht · 14/04/2009 18:14

As a teacher all i can say is that many indies are desperate for the numbers at the moment so you are prob in a v good position to haggle

wahwahwah · 14/04/2009 18:23

Please keep everything crossed for us. It also looks probably that DH will get the 'bigR' tomorrow too.

Aww. Good luck. Really hope they are able to offer you an affordable discount.

I am dreading waiting until June when our school announces how much our fees are increasing this year!

Really hope it all worked out for you! Let us know how you get on!

wahwahwah · 15/04/2009 08:58

I read in the papers that fees were unlikely to go up because schools were worrying about children being taken out. Ours fees went up. Again.

Fingers, toes, etc crossed.

Will this be something that will go 'on record' and make us less attractive to any secondary school? That's this mornings panic.

Our fees went up too by 6%.

I called the bursar to discuss notice periods and discuss how to proceed and was told there are no bursaries in the prep and with an income of £40k we would be borderline on whether we qualified in seior school.

Our income has dropped by £20k this last year.

eatyourveg · 15/04/2009 14:54

we managed to get one by emphasising how the school would particularly benefit our son rather than any other school and how they would benefit from having him. At our school it seems that you are more likely to get one if your child has an aptitude for something. We ended up with a bursary and 2 years later they suggested he sit the scholarship exam. So we've got 2 discounts.

the value of bursaries vary. The governing body at our school decides if you are worthy once they have all the financial records and your reason for applying. Then its up to the head to decide how much.

Today I am a little . Meeting went ok. Very very nice Head.

If you don't ask, you won't get. Bite the bullet, swallow your pride and ask.

I think it would be easier if we had to go to the head but at the dc's school the Head has nothing whatsoever to do with fees.

It is a faceless bursar who we don;t know from Adam and who doesn;t know our children, based up at the senior school.
