Anyone recommend good general knowledge books?

DS, aged 8, seems to remember everything he reads! He's devouring the guiness book of records at the moment, we have a few usbourne encyclopedias around the house and he also gets "first news" (kids newspaper) every few wks. Anyone got any favourite general knowledge books, not typically "encyclopedia" based, they could recommend

We have loads of these sorts of books. They particularly like Horrible History, Horrible Science, etc.
this is a good set we have

Generally The Book People are an ideal source of this sort of material without breaking the bank!

ds1 also likes the New Scientist books I think there are at least 3 in the series now.

this book - if you can stomach the title/cover - is more accessible for younger children.

The book of general ignorance is aimed at a slightly older audience, but my boys love this too.

My ds is like this too, he is 7

My suggestions are DK Eyewitness books

I like this one

The link above is for Bananas which is the clearance department of the book people suggested by Roisin

Bill Bryson's book is a big hit with my children

Oh yes - the Bill Bryson book is fab. I read it too because every time I've tried to read the adult version I've kept falling asleep

Great - thanks for all the links

There's one called The Student's Companion which I used as a child -it is brilliant as it has everything in it.
