Our LEA has a website with maps and details of catchment areas for all local schools.

I had to ring the schools and ask.

Hi callme!

Google your town name with "catchment area". You'll probably get a map.

SuperBunny · 14/03/2009 20:28

Thanks. After much googling, I found the LEA website said it will be the nearest school measured in a straight line so not actually the nearest school to get to. Hmm. Now I need to find a map.

look at 'up my street' and click on primary schools or whatever age gp you are looking for. it will give you distances to schools. and you can check the lea website too, some of them have an 'enter your postcode' on the looking for schools page which tells you.

call on 01623433433 ask school admin then ask your catchment area or pupiles admin and ask what, when, whear They will send you a admission pack you can pick 3 schools ect....

mummytime · 06/05/2010 11:47

Some of the LEAs have a system (called SMART? I think) where you type in your postcode and it shows closest schools. But you still might not get into your closest school, you need to check admission criteria etc.

titchy · 06/05/2010 11:47

Be careful - most LEAs don't actually operate catchment areas these days. Tends to be siblings first, then the how ever many spaces are left to to those that live nearest, which will obviously change from year on year.

Here RCs have catchment areas but no-one else does - for primary it is all on distance. You can still get good schools if you're prepared to travel, as some good schools aren't always popular.

All secondary schools have catchment areas in our area, but often go down to somewhere on the distance criteria (the lowest category) except for RC schools which is feeder school only.

Personally I would contact someone at the education office who would be able to give advice about which schools are traditionally oversubscribed, how many preferences you are allowed to express etc, that way you know you are filling in the form right.

Believe it or not, I do still know people who will insist that if you only put one school down that they have to give it to you!

The Good Schools Guide website has info and maps on catchment areas - and loads more. www.goodschoolsguide.co.uk

Its best to speak to the education dept of your council as catchment areas can change from year to year
