the teacher had to admit to me.

He doesn't really contribue in the class - fair enough she's not too worried about that - some people just don't like contributing in large groups - she admits she's one of them - fine with a class of 30 children but put another adult in the room and she crumbles (and I'm pretty much the same)

However he also doesn't work quickly enough so doesn't finish his work so she can't see that he's understood the stuff either.

He's so obsessed with perfection (neatness) that he spends ages writing things down and then doesn't get a chance to finish it

So she thinks he's doing well but couldn't say with total confidence

OMG !!!!

How old is DS1?

FAQinglovely · 12/03/2009 18:45

He's 8 (YR2)

tbh it didn't surprise me - I'd been looking at his school books from his tray while we were waiting and they were full of half finished things and lots of "try to work quicker" type comments.

We're going to do some "speed practice" at home setting the timer for a minute and him copying a section out of his F1 book (which he's obsessed with) and then repeat each day (or so) to see if he can increase the amount he can do in that time. He loves copying things like that out so shouldn't be too much of a chore for him.

no no no no no - he's 8 (YR3)

FAQ, my dd3 was like that, speed comes with time/age for some children. Did she suggest a timer?

She is also very bright, so even though its not in there books, its in there head

FAQinglovely · 12/03/2009 18:55

yea she's suggested practicing with a timer at home. He loves copying his Wii instructions/F1 book bits out. Spends ages over it doing it perfectly.

So we've agreed (me and him) that he'll do his copying out with a timer and not worry about how neat it is - just seeing how much he can do.

btw Divvy - you are still coming tomorrow night aren't you.

I know you said you wouldn't be but I hope you saw I explained that I'm still having it here at 8pm with not a town pub in sight until much much later once everyone (well except ShelleyLou) has gone home

No an egg timer next to him at school.

Its VERY difficult for them not to do neat, children like this though. It can cause alot of upset.

FAQinglovely · 12/03/2009 19:02

I know it's difficult, I'm hoping this speed copying his favourite book will help.

If we choose the same passage say for a week and then he can see how much more he managed to copy. He is bright (I know it - of cours) so he does understand that speed and neatness will eventually come together.

Problem is things like their spelling test is done in the form of a paragraph with the word in it.

Teacher says a sentence with the first word in it. They have to write it down. Then after a set time she'll say the 2nd sentence with the 2nd word in it.

He's just not getting the sentences written down in time and so failing his spelling tests (although his spelling in literacy when he writes stories is absolutely fine - but again he doesn't finish his stories)

Well maybe the teacher needs to be a bit easier on him, and ask if he can just write the words for now.

I dont think anything helped me dd, it was soemthing she had to grow out of, and understand that it was holding her back.

Also think the teacher is a bit crap, to have let this go on as it has, to the extent she doesnt know how he is doing....she is failing him imo

FAQinglovely · 12/03/2009 20:18

yeah - that's true - he's up for the "speed practice" though so we'll give that a go and see how he gets on.

So you coming tomorrow night then - if so I suppose I'd better send you a message on FB with my address - could be rather useufl
