Firstly just want to say hi as I'm new to mumsnet, so hello to everyone.

I have a ds who is 3 and a dd who is 4 and would be due to start school in September, however after her horrific time in preschool she is scared silly about school, so I have decieded not to force her and to home educate her instead ( this is after many months of thinking and lots of reading, etc).

Is there anyone else out there who home educates and if so how are you finding it, what are the highs and lows, any advice gratefully recived.

Hello!

There are lots of home edders here...there is even a home ed topic.

I don't home ed (tried and failed ) but I'm sure you'll get lots of advice here.

Hi,

What happened when you tried? Why did you fail?

Thanks for replying.

Hi emma - there's quite a lot of Hme Educating parents on MN - we even have a topic area, so it might be worth you putting another post in there www.mumsnet.com/Talk/home_ed to get their attention.

I home ed, but my son is 15 so I'm probably not much help to you! But welcome anyway

Thanks Amuminscotland it is great to hear from you. Have you always home ed your son?

No, we've only been doing it for a couple of years, so I've no experience of it with a small child. But there are certainly lots on here who have either never sent them to school or pulled them out when it didn't suit, so you should get plenty of advice and support.

Don't be put off becuase I failed! It was only for a term because DS school refused. It's not what I (or he) really wanted, it was just a better option that the school he was at.

I home educate my 7 year old, 4 year old, and I also have a 7 month old. We have done it right from the start so ask if there is anything you want to know.

But keep your options open - ds hated any sort of pre school, but loves school now.

Hi Emma,
I Home Ed 2 boys, 8 and 12. Took them out nearly 4 years ago and have never looked back. We decided for a number of reasons but my youngest one STILL remembers the trauma of being at his nursery, even now. Some kids just don't like it and if you have the desire/opportunity to do it, I'd say go for it!
Have look on the HomeEd topic board, there are many people who will be willing to help out there.

Good luck with whatever you decide

Hi, I had a visit from SS last sept. My DD's O/T called them because she didn't believe that home schooling was good for socialising. At the time i had just taken DD out of school because she was terribly unhappy and it took her along time to get over it. To me school was a form of child abuse! Anyway SS came and checked both DD's bedrooms and looked at their work. We are registered with our LEA so i copied their last report to SS, i also sent them a letter of support from DD's private educational physcologist, one from our local home education advisor and wrote a letter myself explaining HE, the law, why we are HE and DD progress in social and emotional development since HEing. SS didn't have a clue about HE and the law they also didn't know about the EHE officer at the same building at county hall.We had a meeting with them and they said that they would take no further action. All this was terribly stressful for me - especially them checking DD's rooms. On a possitive note i'm trying to educate people about HE as a real option. I'm wondering about writing to all my neighbours to tell them what we are doing- has anyone else done this? Sorry its a long one.
