Homework - Where do your DC do theirs?

DD1 (aged 8) has started insisting that she do her homework in her bedroom on the floor. She says it is more comfortable . Previously she did it in our spare room / study, which has 2 desks. The move does seem to have coincided with DD2 starting to get homework and hence using the study at the same time, though according to DD1 this is not the issue. I am not particularly bothered what room she does it in, but I hate her doing it on the floor. I just can't believe it is either comfortable or conducive to doing her work well. I don't want to put a desk in her room as there isn't much space. Is this a battle worth pursuing or should I let her do it where she likes, providing that quality doesn't slip.

If she's doing it without nagging, and the quality doesn't slip, I'd be inclined to leave her to it. But you could see if there's any other flat surface which might be more comfortable - DS always used to use the dining table or the breakfast bar, which meant he could get my attention if he needed any guidance.

I used to sit on the floor to do my homework. I had a desk, but it was usually covered in stuff essential things I didn't want to lose.
My work didn't suffer.
I'd chose another battle.

choose even

My dd does her at a desk in her room. It's a desk from the Futon company and the chair goes underneath it. Will try to find a link

OMG, now I'm looking 'lose' and 'choose' and am full of self-doubt.

but I'd still do let her do her homework on the floor

magentadreamer · 05/03/2009 17:08

If she's doing it then I'd leave her to lie on the floor. My DD either does hers on the computer or laid on her bed.

this. I can't remember paying £149 for them though, I thought it was more round the £99 mark.

My primary-age ds does his on the floor and/or at the kitchen table. Spellings are done lying down on the sofa

Wow, thanks for the responses. Have wrestled the PC back from DS. Yes, I think I should bow to MN wisdom and go with the flow.

Thanks for the link, Fimbo. It's a beautiful desk. Sadly we are in Spain so I think the delivery charge would be pretty high. May have a look next time we are in Ikea, but I am not really sure the lack of desk in the bedroom is the issue. Perhaps it is just another attempt to pull herself away from DD2 (aged 6) a bit. They share a room and I think that starting to share the homework room too might have been a struggle too much for her.

I definitely feel less of a slack mother now that I know other people have offspring lying all over the place .

x posts, Bloss. Yes, handwriting is one of my worries (and aches and pains due to awful posture, but that's probably me projecting on her how I would feel in that position!). And here in Spain handwriting is something they are far too very hot on. They teach joined up right from the start and everyone has to do the loops etc in exactly the right way. It does look like she can do it fine despite the floor. I think I will back off as she has always done her homework with the minimum of fuss and seems to be doing well in general at school.
