Independant prep schools in Cobham area

Nelrod · 13/02/2009 18:21

We are moving to Cobham in a few months time and have a toddler (boy) who has to start nursery in September as well as a newborn baby boy. I have been looking at Danes Hill and Feltonfleet as well as pre-prep Glenesk. Can anyone give me more information on any of these schools i.e. the good, the bad and the ugly? I need some more first hand personal info than what is said in the Ofsted and ISC reports to make the right choice for our sons. If you know of other good schools (co-ed only please) then also please let me know.

There is a nice American school. And judging from your use of "co-ed" I'm think you might be American... Although an American would probably say "coed".

LadyMuck · 13/02/2009 18:52

How would a British person say co-ed? Aren't all schools either single sex or co-ed (or diamond - there's some new term for those)?

gobsmackedasever · 13/02/2009 18:57

Ninanannar my name says it all.

As a relatively new active contributor I am daily astounded at the venomous schadenfeude of mordant comments like yours, which sadly are all too prevalent on this primary school forum and elsewhere

Can we not just accept that we are all here to do the best for our kids and try to help out as and where we can

So what if someone else makes typos or doesn't know the difference between x or y suffix

The clue is on the tin. This is mumsnet not grammarians corner

Please please save this sort of unpleasantness for pedant's / pedants' corner or the AIBU if you must share your frustration

It is also possible as was the case in a previous thread that the OP was not a native speaker of English

Daneshill is fab but very big and very very expensive
Millbourne Lodge (not sure of spelling so please no invective from anyone) and Feltonfleeet also highly regarded
Also Claremont Fan seems to be going strong

No personal experience of them but just grapevive views

Hope someone else will be along soon to help out

gobsmackedasever · 13/02/2009 18:59

grammarian's /grammarians'

happywomble · 13/02/2009 19:10

I've heard Danes Hill has excellent facilities but it is a big prep school. (don't know if you are looking for a big or small school)

Glenesk sounds a lovely school but it is owned by the cognita group - a profit making organisation.

Haven't heard of Feltonfleet.

Hope some one who lives in Cobham can give you more info.

ruty · 13/02/2009 19:15

I think you mean grapevine.

Sorry no help but couldn't resist

goingslowlyroundthebend · 13/02/2009 19:51

Parkside is lovely, friends kids are very, very happy. Feltonfleet, hmmm, know two friends who have pulled their kids out, but others are happy. Very shiny facilities! When we went to visit we found the headmaster a little weird. Seems also to be gaining a footballers wives reputation.
Danes Hill huge school, one friends child is very happy there however we have spent this afternoon with someone else who pulled their child out due to chronic bullying issues.
You could also go further north, Surbiton has Shrewsbury House from 7 (very academic, great facitilites, excellent sport and strong head), Esher has Milbourne Lodge Junior, excellent well run, fantastic head and boys go on to good range of prep schools.

goingslowlyroundthebend · 13/02/2009 19:57

If you want a small, friendly preprep (up to 8) try Emberhurst in Esher, know lots of people who have sent their children there and rave about it. Sends children onto all the prep schools in the area. There is also Weston Green School close by in Thames Ditton.

surreylady · 13/02/2009 20:09

depending on where in Cobham - the Guildford Prep schools have a large intake from Cobham - for boys, Cranmore in West Horsley and Lanesborough in Guildford.

AtheneNoctua · 13/02/2009 21:33

Well every time I say coed the English people look at me cross eyed and say "You mean mixed?" So I figured it was American. Only an American would probably not put the "-" in the word.

AtheneNoctua · 13/02/2009 21:36

I think in honor of this thread we should all say "indepedant"

happywomble · 13/02/2009 21:47

did you mean honour?

(I realise you are using the American spelling)

I have always lived in England and would say co-ed I think

scienceteacher · 13/02/2009 22:12

I think you can't really go wrong with Feltonfleet and Daneshill.

I was sceptical about Claremont Court for its obvious Christian Science links, but I have a friend whose DS goes there and they think it is fab.

ACS Cobham has been mentioned there - I have taught in ACS Egham and it is a very fine school if you are after an IB education.

May I put in a word for St George's Junior School in Weybridge (very easy for Cobham and a school bus service available). It feeds into a very good senior school.

Bump for someone on primary thread

overweightnoverdrawn · 07/03/2009 18:26

st georges senior school is fab the junior I wouldnt touch with a ten foot barge pole .

MollieO · 07/03/2009 20:02

overweightnoverdrawn why not? I don't like the fact that if you are rubbish at sports there you don't get to play in a team. I also think the junior school is incredibly selective - selecting out at 3 and 7.

Mumsnut · 07/03/2009 20:08

I know quite a few families who have pulled their kids from Claremont.
Milbourne Lodge Junior is fantastic for pre-prep; Milbourne Lodge Senior has been fantastic in the past but is without a head at the moment.

Danes Hill VERY VERY big; lots of footballers' kids apparently, and generally 'smart'.

The nursery at Parkside is called merrileas, and is PHENOMENAL.

Babbity · 07/03/2009 20:11

I really rate The Good Schools Guide, which gives insider-type info on most of the above-mentioned schools. You can get online access immediately via PayPal.

overweightnoverdrawn · 08/03/2009 14:46

All I can say about the junior school is sports sports and sports plus not all but a few crappy teachers that the weak head knows about but cannot get rid of and so the circle carrys on .

summer111 · 10/03/2009 20:39

My cousin went to Parkside and was extremely happy there.

suefas · 16/03/2009 13:42

Have you tried www.find-a-school.co.uk to look for schools? They will arrange prospectuses to be sent to you (free service)

wilbur · 16/03/2009 13:52

Aaah, I grew up in Cobham. Am getting a bit misty for it now, although it looks nothing like it used to. FWIW, I know a lot of ex-Danes Hill and Feltonfleet boys who are mostly extremely nice and well-rounded men and a number of my closest friends went to Claremont and are delightful, if not overly burdened by academic qualifications. I can tell you which of the senior schools produced the best kissers, too, if that helps...
