We are moving to the Berkhamsted area and wonder if anyone can give any further insights to: Berkhamsted Collegiate Prep School, Westbrook Hay Prep School and The Beacon School in Chesham Bois? It's hard to get an inside view when all you can do is read a review and do a quick tour etc.

If there are any other schools (state or private) that anyone can recommend, please do share!

Thanks!

I've just joined this thread and have been reading it with interest. My ds1 (4yrs) is currently in reception at Little Gaddesden School and we've applied for Yr1 at Berko... so very interested to read your comments about the school! We're fairly new to the area and just outside Berko, so would like to meet up with other reception aged children and their parents.

They don't have lessons but they do have 'Saturday sport', not sure if you have to attend or not.

Hi, Berkhamsted School has now aquired Haresfoot School and is to become Berkhamsted PrePrep. Haresfoot has 8 acres of beautiful grounds so lots of space. Also, the sports facilities used by the Prep and Senior schools are also very spacious, although in the town, I would strongly recommend.

I would never recommend berkhamsted school. Extremely arrogant kids, especially girls, very mediocre teachers, and unfriendly ambiance. Teachers are tired and without passion for tesching, especially the one being there for 20-30 years. Lessons are boring, never interactive or interesting. Teachers are impolite , intervert and arrogant same as kids in the school. Unfriendly saussige factory.

Hello Teetering. Just wondered if you managed to settle on Berkhamsted and what you made of the schools.
We are thinking of moving into the area and schools is a big issue. Children aged 5&7 both girls.

I think you either love or hate Berkhamsted School and it's something you can only decide for yourself by visiting there. I live in the town and have not chosen it for my two daughters. Numerous reasons why not but it just didn't feel like us and I don't believe in "cutting" kids on the basis of academic ability when in the primary years. Fine to not them continue at 11+ if it's felt the school is not right for the child, but what a killer for a Y2 or 3 child who has to go to a new school when they already have established peer groups? You also basically commit to sending your child there until they are 18 and I wanted far more options at 11+ than just carrying on at the same school. That said, for the majority it is a great school where the children get excellent results. There are several other great preps in the area with a very different feel - it's all just down to personal taste
