Help, dd placed in wrong year?

My dd has just been placed in reception class when she shouldn't have started until September. School are horrified by their mistake but cant and dont want to move her down until September. They are going to give me a package of things to do with her to help her catch up. Has anyone got any ideas?

she doesn't need to catch up.....she's still only 4 and shouldbe enjoying her days learning through play

whatsername · 08/04/2005 22:01

How old is she?

lucy5 · 08/04/2005 22:07

Shes 4 and 4 months. I am just worried that she will feel different to the other kids. Before this she was in Spanish nursery and became quite shy because of the language barrier. I moved her thinking it would give her confidence and allow her to bloom and enjoy learning. I think ive messed up big time.

Just looked at your other thread, too, lucy5. I can't see that you 'should' do anything. Just let her have fun socialising & playing, I wouldn't take any of it seriously.

My DS will be 4.7yrs when he starts reception in september.
Where i live they only enroll pupils once a year, so there can be almost 12 months different in the ages.

whatsername · 08/04/2005 22:10

My dd is just turned 4 (last week), and tbh there is no way I would be happy having her in school now. But then I HE anyway, so I guess I'm biased.

You have to follow your heart, if you're not happy then take her out.

lucy5 · 08/04/2005 22:16

I didnt want her in school either but we have recently moved to a new country and I was the first one to find a job,and am contracted until September. My dh was at home with her but he recently landed a job which means we have no choice. For that reason, I cant take her out and also the places are like gold dust and there isn't a good choice of other schools.

Ok, so what things are they suggesting she needs catching up in?

lucy5 · 08/04/2005 22:21

Well the other kids can read and write, I dont know really as she has only been there for 2 days but I have a meeting with head of infants next week. Her teacher said that she isnt able to hold the pencil correctly as her hand isnt mature enough.

can i ask if my daughter starts in jan 2006 (as she will do) does that mean that in sept (of same year.2006) she jumps up to yr 1 already although she`s only had 6 months in reception?whilst others that start in the sept will have a full academic year before yr 1..bit unfair if thats the case..does anyone know whether they allow more for these children or do they just have to muck in..!!!

whatsername · 08/04/2005 22:25

So are they expecting her to be able to do the same as the older kids?

lucy5 · 08/04/2005 22:31

im not quite sure what they are expecting of her really as my mum picked her up from school and only had a brief chat with the head of infants and class teacher. I think i am worrying because I dont have much to go on at the moment. There is no way I am going to put any pressure on her to keep up with any one, I just want her to have a happy term and be at a similar level to the other kids coming up in September.

Personally, I would sit down and do colouring together with her. Things which involve fine motor skills such as puzzles and sorting small things like beads into colour groups or whatever (things which encourage her to use her fingers in a pincer grip should help with hand control and therefore holding a pencil), also lots of reading with her.

Aniles · 08/04/2005 22:45

Yes bambi, that's right. It's certainly not fair though and lots of schools now are getting rid of reception and changing early years to foundation 1 and foundation 2 where all children will have a full year in foundation 1 (nursery) and a full year in foundation 2 (reception). It's much better like this!

Aniles · 08/04/2005 22:46

And yes, they do have to muck in!

bambi06 · 08/04/2005 22:51

omg .id better get some writing and letter practice in poor child.i really feel like keeping her back till sept 2006 intake ..if thats possible(shes 4 in june) but she`s dying to go to school like her big brother

whatsername · 08/04/2005 22:57

Bambi, they don't have to go until they're 5.

And I wouldn't do educational stuff with her, practice things like dressing and tying shoe laces, feeding herself and holding pencil.

Aniles · 08/04/2005 23:00

No, bambi, it's not possible to keep her back as far as I know. If she started school in Sept 2006 she'd go stright to year 1 with no recdeption! Don't worry too much, lot's of children are in the same boat and if she's already keen than that's a good start

Aniles · 08/04/2005 23:00

Ooops, my typing's a bit off!

lucy5 · 08/04/2005 23:16

Thanks whatsername, luckily im doing this already. I think i just got myself into bit of a tizz.

OP posts:
whatsername · 08/04/2005 23:22

That's understandable. She'll probably cope better that you imagine. Just try and get as much information from the head as you can, they must be prepared to make certain allowances for her.

Just keep home life as relaxed as possible and encourage the physical and fine motor skills. Leave the rest to the school, that's my advice anyway. Feel free to ignore

lucy5 · 08/04/2005 23:23

Won't ignore you, sound advice, thanks.
