Today my school wanted to stay open and were forced to close by over anxious parents, the police and bus companies.

It has not been pleasant day weather wise, snow, wind and rain. Some parts of the site were flooding, but you tread carefully and stay inside at break if you dont want to play in the slush. We are a big site and the paths are slippy but you take care.

We got more snowfall at about 1pm and parents started phoning the school demanding to pick up their children. The bus company then phoned and said that on the advice of the police they were sending their buses at 1.30.

Our students come from a wide catchment, some of it very rural so we had to give in even though the head protested repeatedly. The daft thing was that when we left 2 and a bit hours later, normal closing time the roads were much safer.

I have missed really important lessons before my year 11 mock exams and am feeling [mad]

My ds's school has been open for the lasttwo days but he can't go in because his school minibus won't pick him up.
So he has had a week off school.
I don't mind because he is lovely and i love having him here but others may not be at home normally

My ds's school has been open every day except Monday. The secondary school down the road from his has been shut 4 days out of 5. Same roads and same weather. Difference - my ds's school buses ran and the local council ones didn't. Catchment area broader for my ds's school than the secondary school. The only difference between the two is one is private and one is state.

We opened every day bar tuesday. Monday it was madness coming in, six or seven members of staff lost control of their cars on the ice coming in and had to be towed out of ditches.

We are a state school but wanted to be open for the full day today. It was taken out of our hands though.

Ds's school closed all week bar half a day on Weds. Grrrrrrrr.

Apparently yesterday the police told them the road up to school was 'too dangerous' as it's a steep hill. Well, how about getting out of the sodding car and walking, then? Even for people coming a long way, there are plenty of level parking spaces a few minutes' walk away.

I think that is the problem. The local council made the decision not to provide a bus service and advised that weather would be terrible. It was bad but not so bad as to make roads impassible, main roads were driveable. Not sure I'd have coped if ds had been at home all week. My ds was taught how to make and throw snowballs by the TA and had a fab time playing in the snow. They also had some lessons outside to make the most of the conditions!{smile]

I think you sound really brave, twinset, and I would have trudged through the snow to get to your school.

Here it was the opposite. Traffic and buses were running, but not the teachers so to speak.

SO it's good to read of really committed teachers. Not that I'm complaining that my dcs had a day off in the snow

Friday was not about being brave it just did not make sense to me to send students home when we had them already. They had to make the jounrney home annway so let them finish their education first.
