Subjects leading to Egyptology

DD wants to be an egyptologist. What subjects should she be doing, what's the route? I'm assuming she'd have to do archaeology at Uni? Does anyone know?

Thank you.

Thanks everyone.

Have had a casual-just-in-passing chat with dd today. She said "ooooh I'd never get into Colyton" - it's almost mythical at her school, as every year there are some doing the entrance exam, and as far as I can gather, they all fail. Anyway, we had a look at their site where they had kindly posted sample exam questions. Well, dd did them all and got them all right! Wow, that deserves a reward. I knew she wasn't working to full potential at school, but this took me aback.

Your dd should pester you to take her to Swansea!

There is a small but perfectly formed Egypt Centre on the Swansea University campus!! Its a free museum, she would love it, the campus is surrounded by singleton park and adjacent to Swansea bay.

here

Hey maybe she could aspire to study at Swansea University

Yurtgirl, that is brilliant - we almost always go camping on the Gower and go through Swansea on the way. I'll tell dh we have to leave earlier and STOP there. It sounds like it would really make her holiday.

I've just looked at the map - I think we must go straight past it! I'm really excited already.

Thats really cool!

You could easily visit it from the gower - rather than stop on the way. There are lots of other fab things to do in Swansea as well

I hope she loves it - I am thrilled I had the chance to tell you about it

Ds and I did a home education project on Egypt a few weeks ago - he made a fabulous arm bracelet and a neck thingy - If dd would like to know how ds and I can explain and possibly share photos of his creation!!!

Oh that would be great, thank you yurtgirl. We made cardboard ones for world book day a few years ago, but they're not very good (though dd has lovingly preserved them in her egyptian display on top of the chest in her room - they're really tatty now.)

As for the museum, I think we would probably have to stop on the way, once we get to the site dh becomes immovable.

Now, to sum up: dd would benefit hugely from learning french or german (or both). 'Learning skills' - research, study, and writing - are important. History, ancient history, world religions or similar, are relevant subjects. A science will show she's a good all-rounder, and be helpful, esp. biology if she wants to dig up bodies. The 11+ will widen her choices next year (assuming she passes). As MillyR says "being single minded and determined about pursuing an interest" will stand her in good stead.

Well, thank you everyone, now I have it all in one place and I can keep referring to it over the years! Makes me wonder what will actually happen in the future; now's the time to get the time machine out of the shed, dust it off and get it back to work. Going to be a busy afternoon.

We have just remembered there is also a mummy in a sarcophagus (sp?) in the Swansea museum, also well worth a visit -there are loads of archeological things of interest there too, with lots of things for children to do, also free.

We are definitely stopping Swansea on the way to the Gower this summer. DH has agreed, and he will never hear the last of it if dd doesn't get to go there. You never know, we may get a day out from the site for a change
