Reception to year 2 are Infants (Key Stage 1), Years 3-6(usually) are Juniors (Key Stage 2) - all are Primary

CarGirl · 22/01/2009 18:13

Primary school in England goes

Reception
Year 1
Year 2

I think Kindi is the equivalent to Reception so their grade 1 = our year 1

CarGirl · 22/01/2009 18:15

Kindy in the USA is Equivalent to Year 1, ages 5-6, just googled it. So their grade 1 is equivalent to our year 2

Here kindergarten is from 2.5 years through to 6 years old - Yr1, then they go to a different school.

I know someone asking a similar question. Academically, is Kindergarten on a par with Year 1 or is their K work similar to Reception work. They are moving over to the UK soon, their DD would start in K in the US, is she going to be behind having to go into Year 1?

jabberwocky · 22/01/2009 21:57

I'll bet someone on the Living in the US thread will know.

CarGirl · 22/01/2009 22:15

They start their schooling with grade 1 so I suspect their dd would be "behind" but not massively so because I'm sure at Kindy they will have learnt lots of stuff through play.

kindergarteners have reading, writing, math and science. Not sure how that compares to reception or year 1.

thequietone · 22/01/2009 22:42

kinergarten in Germany is from 3-6 yr old

mynewnickname · 23/01/2009 20:01

I think pre-k is like reception and kindy is year one but not 100% sure.

KG is the year in the USA before first grade. In most states, there is little in the way of academic curriculum, and it is generally a half-day thing for the whole year.

They start as rising 6s, so same age as our Year 1, but very different in terms of what they do.

A lot of nursery schools (daycare or preschool) are licensed to do KG, so the kids can stay where they are rather than start KG in the school system. This is helpful for working parents who would struggle with half-days. Typically, though, kids would go to KG in a primary school.

As for the jump from USA to UK...

My DD did a year at KG in the USA, and then we moved over here, so she went straight into Year 2.

She joined Year 2 as a complete non-reader, but was caught up and on the top table by half-term.

scienceteacher, I think things have changed a bit since you last saw kindergarten in the US. It is in the elementary schools with, usually, first through 4th or 5th grade. It is a full day just like the rest of the grades and definitely has an academic curriculum. Ds1 does all the things I mentioned previously as well as writing workshop and journaling.

jabberwocky · 26/01/2009 14:21

I've never heard of a daycare doing kindergarten unless it was licensed as a private school like Montessori.

scienceteacher · 26/01/2009 17:29

I'm talking about Ohio - every state is different.

There were definitely daycares in my city that had both preschool and KG programmes. They could leave their daycare and go straight to first grade. If they weren't in one of these establishments, they'd have to do KG.

And half-day was the norm. We were able to pay extra for full day in our school district. In our district there was one full-day KG and 6 half-day ones.

jabberwocky · 26/01/2009 18:38

How long ago was that? I thought federal norms had mandated full day kindergarten several years ago at least.

scienceteacher · 26/01/2009 20:44

"All-Day Kindergarten: The Wyoming Board of Education continues its commitment to all-day kindergarten.

Placement for all-day kindergarten is handled through a lottery system after the registration, if necessary. The number of registered children determines tuition for the all-day kindergarten program.

Tuition is payable in three installments: at registration, in late August, and in late October. Required deposit at registration will be approximately $700.00."
