Reception choice dilemma

DD2 will be four in August and starts school in September. Sometime soon we will have an interesting choice to make about which Reception class to request.

The school is a two form entry. They are having a new building constructed and it will open in Sept. At that point one of the Reception classes will be on the main site, with all the Yr 1-6 classes. So it will be a BIG school compared to anything she's experienced before. But her big sister will be in year 3. And I know and like the teacher (even though she scares the willies out of some of my friends )

There is also a Foundation Unit at the Children's Centre, which is part of the school but on a different site. It will provide one Reception class in a much smaller setting, sharing facilities with the Nursery class. We could ask for her to be at that site, where she would be in the middle of the age range and get a more gentle introduction to school. But she wouldn't be on the same site as her sister and when she hits Year 1 she'd have to transfer to the main site. .

I feel that the Children's Centre could potentially be a lovely place to start school, but the children there might have problems integrating with the rest of the school when they hit Year 1. The safe option is to stick with the mainstream class on the main site. But she will be very, very young and she's finding her (fairly formal) nursery a bit of a struggle so I'm tempted to give her another year of a pre-school type experience and hope they are good at managing the transition.

I know that I have to make my own decision, but I'd be interested in anyone else's gut reaction. Or experience of dedicated Foundation Units on separate sites - which is a new one on me.

no experience of what you describe. But have 2 thoughts.

  1. logistics - will drop off & pick up be possible/easy for both her and her sister?
  2. gut feel would be for the smaller foundation unit, for a just 4 child.
I wouldn't worry about the integration in yr 1 thing, there will be a whole class of them doing it, plus a class of new reception.

I would choose the main site for reception. There is a big change between reception and year one as it is let alone having to get used to a completely different environment as well.

DD1 is an October baby, & dd2 is a (late) July one. For dd1 I would have picked the main reception, & for dd2 I would have loved the option of the second as she had a bad start & it was all too much for her (socially, not academically). Transferring to the bigger school at just turned 5 would have been so much easier with that extra bit of maturity. It all really depends on your dds personality really. Good luck with your choice.

I would prefer the children's centre for a summer born child. However, if the two sites are more than a 2 minute walk from each other, then I would select the main school. I have experience of a split site infant/junior school (1km apart) and it is miserable for parents, especially those who do not drive.

The convenience is an issue. We live right next door to the main site, so a big part of me is really looking forward to having them on one site. But I do wonder whether DD2 would get a better deal by being at the smaller setting, in which case we could cope with one more year of trogging from one place to another.

Some interesting thoughts here - thanks for replying.
