Our school's P.T.A applied for new people to join last year and said if there were not enough mum's they would be unable to function. This created about ten new members including myself.Trouble is they seem to want you there ,but don't want to listen to any of your idea's it's almost like they have there own meetings before the meeting that we all attend and we don't get to speak.I tried to give them an idea last week and didn't get to finish the sentence. They dismissed it without letting me finnish.Myself and some of the new parents are egar with fresh money making idea's and ready to resign if this keeps up.What a shame for the school and the children. These people also ignore other parents unless they need help for fete's,disco's e.t.c and then wonder why nobody wants to help.Doe's anyone else have this problem it's so frustrating?

At our school, the PTA meetings are not advertised at all. They advertised for help with the Christmas fair and I went along and ran the toy stall.

One of the organisers complained that only 4 people helped the year before. I pointed out that perhaps if they advertise the meetings then more people might come. She replied that they did not want more PTA members just more helpers!!!!!!! Der! thought they were the same thing.

Anyway ever since the Christmas fair, the main organiser who I spoke to a lot on the day, has ignored me!

Remember something else too, I told one of the organisers that I was Chair of the local NCT. She asked me if I thought it would be a "conflict of interests". Ha Ha

robinw - doh ! having a brain dead day - I remember I 'stole' lots of your ideas last year!! so keep coming up with some new ones please. How did you make the hot water bottles (have sewing machine out as was making costimes for parties)

SoupDragon · 02/04/2003 19:24

NCT Chair eh, Rhiannon? AND on the PTA? You are a glutton for punishment

Rhiannon · 02/04/2003 20:16

I think it's probably because I'm so bossy, it's a good way of putting all my ideas into action! Tee hee.

I am actually Co-Chair with Xanthe this year (just in case she reads this - don't want to upset her).

I did make once make this suggestion at a PTA meeting, but it wasn't followed up: if your school is small and you need to drum up custom for school fairs etc, why not send out events information to all those parents with children on the waiting list for the school - like those with rising fours for the reception year? By attending the events it gives the waiting list parents a good insight into the school, as well as providing more custom for all those stalls.

That's a really good idea Tigermoth, I'm sure lots of parents would be particularly 'keen' to get involved before the reality sets in; I always go along to our local school's events, despite DS only being 2, because I am nosey but also I think it's important to 'get noticed' - does that make me sound arrogant.

I also wonder why schools don't contact ex-pupils more often, the Americans are very good at this, I would love to hear from my old schools and I am sure you could generate some financial support. It wouldn't be that difficult to put out contacts via Friends Reunited.

We're working on it (Playgroup) and will let you know how we get on.
