how old is she? 3?
at ds1's nursery they start teaching them how to write their name just before they start school, so 4/4.5 yrs old.

none of his peers can write their own name.,

how do you knwo the other children can>?

Children are not expected to be secure in doing all those things until Year 1. 3 is very early. Are you sure it's not just boastful parents?
DS1 is 3yrs 6months and has just started writing his name (I can tell it's his name at least!) and he can count to 10+ but he can't write numbers.

Don't worry about it at all. DS is 5, in year 1, and is only just beginning to write clearly. Up until now, you would have had to know his name to be able to make it out!

I know loads of others will tell you the same thing, but it is really not worth stressing over things like reading, writing, numbers at such an early stage. Children learn different aspects at very different stages (DS' writing was appalling, but reading good, for example). They all get there in the end, and in their own time.

Just ignore any parents who feel compelled to talk about their little geniuses who are doing joined-up writing at the age of 4, or who read the Financial Times at the age of 3!

And as for how you should teach them these things - just don't! Doing the things that most parents do (reading books to them, couting out loud games like when you go up stairs etc..) will be just fine. The only thing I would say, is that it might be worth checking if your nursery teaches letters phonetically, so that you can use the same technique of saying the letter sounds instead of the letter names if you are ever reading an alphabet book.

And if you are going to teach a child to write his/her name then don't use only capitals or lower case. Encourage them to write it like it should be (For example Emily, not emily or EMILY)

Do not worry. I had the ame thing when DS started nursery. However - education is a marathon not a sprint and being able to write name and count may not indicate that the child has any better understanding of numbers or letters at such a young age. Nursery and early years education should inspire your child to want to learn not be a chore. DS is now 12 and has overtaken many of these young genii. He is an avid reader and one of the best at English in his year , I know it is difficult to keep sense of persepective when every other child seems to be doing more than yours, but remember there will be parents at nursery who wish that their child could be more like yours in some ways too!
